Tropes associated with this episode:

  • Cavalry Refusal: Archie calls his relatives from out-of-town to see if they'll help him out with the cost of Oscar's funeral. Their reaction is pretty much, "Well, good luck with that. Bye."
  • Due to the Dead: Nearly averted. When Oscar dies (off-screen), Archie is massively annoyed because he'll be stuck with making the arrangements for the funeral. And when he finds out how expensive it'll be, and that his relatives (who also didn't like freeloading Oscar) won't help out, he's ready to take Mike's suggestion and just let Oscar be buried in potter's field. But, when Edith tells him funerals are for the living and not the dead, and he sees their friends come over to pay their respects, Archie relents and makes the arrangements.
  • Obnoxious In-Laws: Fits that moocher, Cousin Oscar, to a T. And yes, he is a grouch ... who demands everything ... even a bed that he (eventually) dies in!
  • Passed in Their Sleep: At least Cousin Oscar went peacefully, without barking orders at Archie, Mike and the others.
  • The Thing That Would Not Leave: Oscar had stayed several days with Archie, and Archie and a sympathetic Mike are busy scheming to try to get the grouchy cousin to leave.
  • Unseen Character: Cousin Oscar is never seen on-screen.
  • You Called Me "X"; It Must Be Serious: While Archie is trying to get help in paying for Oscar's sure-to-be-expensive funeral, Mike discovers that all Archie really needs to do is just call the coroner and have Oscar buried in potter's field, with no funeral and no cost for Archie. Archie's so happy at the prospect he actually calls Mike "Mike", rather than the usual "Meathead".
