Recap / All Hail King Julien S 03 E 09 Jungle Games

Go To

It's time for the 64th Every-so-Often Jungle Games, a Madagascar wide sporting event where the various kingdoms of the island put aside their differences in the name of competition. This year Uncle Julien is competing, and he makes a bet with King Julien with the kingdom at stake, a bet that is complicated by the fact that the lemurs' reigning champion Hans has died.

Tropes:

  • Abnormal Limb Rotation Range: When Hans is up for Spear Throwing, he winds up by spinning his upper body around independently of his lower until his arm is ripped off from the force.
  • Achievements in Ignorance: The Fossa manage to finish the games with a score of -52.
  • Break His Heart to Save Him: Mort forms a bond with the zombie Hans, but invokes this trope to get him to run away so Doctor S can't find him and use him in more experiments.
  • Call-Back:
  • Came Back Wrong: Julien has Doctor S try to revive Hans, but as he seems to have been dead for quite some time, he is revived into a mindless shambling zombie.
  • Cheaters Never Prosper: In a competition featuring multiple teams, Uncle Julien and King Julien's teams focus their efforts solely on sabotaging each other, allowing the Rats to pull ahead.
  • Dark Horse Victory: The Rats win the Jungle Games!
  • Death by Irony: Ted enjoys pointing out this fact as Hans died crushed by his trophies.
  • Down to the Last Play: Everything comes down to the last event, with Julien needing to get a perfect score just to tie with Uncle Julien, which turns out to be pointless anyway as the Rat kingdom has a huge lead on both of them.
Julien: This scoring system makes no sense!
  • Drowning My Sorrows: While it's never made clear what's in those beverages Horst is so fond of, he shows signs of this as he is ostensibly supposed to be an event commentator, but simply becomes more and more depressed over his ex-wife Mary Ann as the games go on.
    Xixi: Isn't this exciting, Horst?
Horst: MARY AAAAANN! COME BACK TO MEEEEE!!
  • Feedback Rule: Horst creates a loud feedback when he goes and loudly sips his beverage into the microphone in the middle of his sentence.
  • Go-Karting with Bowser: Everyone is allowed to compete in the Jungle Games, even the fossa and Uncle Julien.
  • G-Rated Drug: As mentioned above, this is the first episode to imply that Horst's "beverages" might be alcoholic.
  • Ironic Echo Cut:
Xixi: One can only imagine what's going through King Julien's head at a moment like this. Probably a "What the...?", "Oh no, you didn't!" or could just be a simple "Snap!". Hard to say.
    (Cut to the plane)
Julien: What the oh, no you didn't, snap! You can't compete in the games!
  • Literal Metaphor: One of the events is literally "Competitive water skiing and shark jumping".
Uncle Julien: Hey babe, I got this one. Heck, I invented it.
  • My Greatest Failure: Julien refuses to participate because of an incident where he killed his pair rhythmic trampoline partner. He recovers when Maurice points out that never happened and said partner is in fact in the audience.
  • Pseudolympics: With events like Competitive Packing.
  • Remember the New Guy?: Hans is introduced as if everyone but Clover has known him all their lives. When Clover questions Julien on this he just says Hans is never around because he spends all his time working out. The fact that he also turns out to have been dead for quite a while also might have something to do with it.
  • Shout-Out: When Julien explains his tragic accident to Maurice, Maurice wonders why he's never heard of any of this until now and Julien simply responds that he's like an onion, in that he has layers Maurice doesn't know about..
  • Sibling Rivalry: Crimson and Clover's rivalry appears here. It motives Clover to cheat for Julien here and they get banned for fighting.
  • Tempting Fate: Julien claims that the only thing that could stop Hans from winning the games is if he were dead. Cut to Hans' house...
    Pancho: Hans is dead!
