Go To

The forty-fourth episode of Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.

Sonic and Tails help out an Owl/Chili Dog Diner owner named Bert Whoo when Robotnik uses his henchbots to try to collect protection money. When the henchbots prove to be no match for Sonic, Robotnik intervenes himself, but in the end, he wears the "concrete overshoes."

This episode provides examples of:

  • Boom in the Hand: The bomb Scratch tosses at Bert is caught by Sonic, who tosses it back at Grounder, where it explodes in his hands.
  • Bumbling Henchmen Duo: Ball Hog and Roller appear in this episode as members of Robotnik's "Or Else" Protection Service.
  • Clothing Damage: After the bomb Scratch tosses at Bert is tossed back to him and Grounder by Sonic, the suits Scratch and Grounder wear as part of Robotnik's "Or Else" Protection Service are scorched from the blast.
  • Comically Missing the Point: When Sonic, Tails, and Bert arrest Scratch and Grounder, Tails tells the robots that their sentence is 12,000 years, with time off for stupid behavior. Scratch and Grounder faint, then Grounder says, "Well, at least we can get time off."
  • Continuity Nod: After Sonic destroy's Robotnik's tank, Robotnik flies back to his fortress in his Egg-O-Matic Tunnelizer and Town Terrorizer from "Lovesick Sonic".
  • Disguised in Drag: Sonic disguises himself as an elderly lady who is a friend of Momma Robotnik to trick him into giving him back the money he took from Mobius Corners.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: One of the scenes from the unaired pilot that Scratch and Grounder watch shows Sonic to be unafraid of water and swimming very well, in contrast to his canon video game counterpart.
  • Evil Debt Collector: Robotnik starts a protection racket in this episode, threatening to beat up anyone who doesn't pay him. Since Bert Whoo is the only person in Mobius Corners who refuses to pay, he's Robotnik's target.
  • Fire-Breathing Diner: When Sonic, disguised as a health inspector, tastes Bert's chili, he breathes fire. He then says, "Hmmm. Chili could use some jalepenos."
  • Fur Is Clothing: Early in this episode, Sonic comes to a tree, and when he runs around it, he strips it of its leaves and the squirrel living inside it of his fur. The squirrel then says "Yikes!", covers his body, and blushes in embarrassment. Thankfully, Tails, who is following behind Sonic, puts everything back where it was.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: At the end of this episode, Tails uses Ball Hog and Roller's parts to build a waiter for Bert's Diner.
  • Heart Symbol: These surround Roxy as she stares lovingly at Sonic eating a chili dog.
  • Hooking the Keys: When Scratch and Grounder are arrested and thrown in jail, Scratch spots the keys to their cell hanging on a hook in the warden's office. Grounder then extends his arm to grab the keys.
  • Literal-Minded: When Scratch and Grounder rush to Robotnik, Robotnik says to them, "Of all the fatuous, bungling, dunderheaded goof-bots, you two take the cake!". Scratch and Grounder think that Robotnik is talking about an actual cake being taken and argue over who took it.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Ball Hog and Roller, two enemies featured in Sonic 1 appear in this episode. Although Roller turns into a bowling ball and rolls into a wall and Ball Hog tosses a bomb, the two badniks look radically different from their video game counterparts.
    • One of the scenes from the unaired pilot that Scratch and Grounder watch features Sonic underwater, being chased by Mashers, an Octus, and Chop-Chops, all underwater badniks featured in Sonic 2.
  • Pie in the Face: Bert does this to Ball Hog when the latter is about to toss a bomb at Sonic.
  • Rooting for the Empire: An in-universe example; while in the break room, Scratch and Grounder watch a cartoon about criminal gangsters on the run from cops. The two badniks root for the gangsters, and Grounder questions why the good guys always have to catch the bad guys.
  • Show Within a Show: Scratch and Grounder are seen watching scenes from the unaired pilot in this episode. They then switch over to a dramatic medical-themed show, and finally settle on a gangster show.
  • Trap Door: Sonic and Tails fall down one when they and Roxy attempt to sneak into Robotnik's fortress to save Bert. Roxy later falls down it and foils Robotnik's plan to keep Sonic, Tails, and Bert his prisoners.
  • Trash Landing: After Ball Hog's bomb destroys him and Roller, Sonic catches their pieces in a trash can.
  • Where's the Kaboom?: When the bomb Scratch tosses doesn't explode, Scratch wonders why it didn't explode. Grounder then tells him it could be because the fuse went out, but Scratch tells him that isn't the case, since the fuse is still burning.
  • Who's on First?: Given that Bert's last name is "Whoo", this episode naturally has these jokes.
Robotnik: It's payback time, Hedgehog! I've got a friend of yours in my dungeon!
    Sonic: Oh, yeah? Who?
Robotnik: That's right, and he's going to stay there!
Sonic: Hold it, are we talking about Bert Whoo?
Robotnik: I told you, Hedgehog, Bert Whoo is my prisoner!
