Recap / Adventures Of Sonic The Hedgehog S 01 E 019 The Mystery Of The Missing Hi Tops

Go To

The ninteenth episode of Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.

The town of MacGuffin holds a Sonic Appreciation Day. When Sonic is a guest at their hotel, someone steals Sonic's red sneakers, preventing him from being able to run fast without his feet burning up. Sonic has to turn to detective work to find out who the culprit is - and fast, as Robotnik is planning to flatten the town with his new Robo Roller.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Sonette, a Loony Fan to Sonic who also bears a massive crush on him. Sonic, for his part, is less than enthused due to how over-the-top obsessed with him she is.
  • Alliterative Name: Harry the Hawker.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: Early in this episode, Scratch and Grounder attempt to destroy the town of MacGuffin with a giant robo-rooter robot, but Sonic manages to foil their plan by tying a banner around its legs.
  • Bookmark Clue: A literal example. Sonic's iconic red sneakers go missing when Sonic stays at a hotel during a festival being held in his honor. On the day before the festival, a salesman named Harry the Hawker gives Sonic a complimentary bookmark. When Sonic interrogates Sonette, a Loony Fan of his, she admits that she stole something from him when she snuck into his hotel room the night before. It wasn't his sneakers, but it was the bookmark that Harry gave him. However, Sonic discovers that it wasn't the same bookmark, because the bookmark Harry gave him was blue, and the bookmark Sonette stole and returned to him was red. This is how Sonic deduces that Harry was the one who stole his sneakers, as during his heist, Harry accidentally dropped a red bookmark, and when he tried to pick it back up, he took the blue one by mistake. He left the red one behind, which Sonette stole.
  • Burning Rubber: Sonic often leaves a trail of fire when running. In this episode, it is revealed that his shoes are friction-proof, and thus his feet would literally burn up if he tried running without them.
  • Conviction by Contradiction: When Sonic's sneakers get stolen, Sonic dismisses Hodgepodge as the thief because his feet are too big to wear them, but the guy who actually stole the sneakers didn't want to wear them, either. In fact, none of the suspects did.
  • Death by Cameo: Among Robotnik's discarded robots are Arms and Davy Sprocket from Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, who also briefly appeared in "Super Special Sonic Search and Smash Squad"
  • Disguised in Drag: Sonic disguises himself as an elderly lady to trick Scratch and Grounder into trying to flatten the ramps for his speed demonstration, only for them to flatten themselves.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Sonic loves the idea of a "Sonic Appreciation Day," but even he's outraged when he finds out Sonette threw herself off the hotel roof just to meet him.
  • Falling into His Arms: Fangirl Sonette lands into Sonic's arms after jumping off a building.
  • Friction Burn: when Sonic's shoes are stolen, he tries running without them and burns his feet after a few seconds, explaining that they were specially designed to protect him from that.
  • Friendly Rival: Hodgepodge the Hare used to be the fastest in Mobius until Sonic showed up. Even so, he harbours no ill will to Sonic for taking his spot, and the two even have a friendly race, with Hodgepodge coming a very close second. Tails, however, erroneously believes that Hodgepodge stole Sonic's sneakers due to said rivalry.
  • Good Angel, Bad Angel: In this episode's "Sonic Says" segment, Sonette has a shoulder angel and a shoulder devil. Her shoulder angel advises her against stealing Sonic's shoes, but her shoulder devil tries to tempt her to steal them. Sonette listens to her shoulder angel, and Sonic is proud of her for doing so.
  • High-Pressure Emotion: When Robotnik loses a card game to one of his robots, his face turns red and steam emits from his ears
  • Hobbling the Giant: Sonic does this to the giant robo-rooter robot controlled by Scratch and Grounder. When the two robots are intruding on a festival dedicated to him, he grabs a banner and wraps it around the robo-rooter's legs.
  • Interspecies Romance: Sonette, a squirrel, has a Loony Fan crush on Sonic, a hedgehog.
  • Loony Fan: Sonette. In addition to changing her name, she jumped off the top of the hotel just to land in his arms and kiss him, has snuck into Sonic's room while he was sleeping and stolen merchandise from him. She also is frequently seen with a piece of Sonic's chewed gum in her mouth, much to both Tails and Sonic's disgust.note
  • Mystery Episode: Sonic and Tails turn to detective work to find Sonic's iconic red sneakers.
  • Mythology Gag: At the beginning of this episode, Buzz Bombers appear as minor enemies with heavy redesigns.
  • Not Me This Time: After Sonic's shoes get stolen, the first suspect he and Tails come across is Coconuts, who was sleeping in the closet of his hotel room. After listening to Coconuts' story, Sonic comes to the conclusion that Coconuts would have captured him instead of just trying to steal his shoes.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Sonette reveals that she changed her name, and is always referred to by it, but her real name is never revealed.
  • Required Secondary Powers: As revealed in this episode, Sonic can't use his Super-Speed without burning his feet unless he has his sneakers.
  • Screaming Woman: Sonette, when she jumps off the hotel roof so that Sonic can save her.
  • Single-Episode Handicap: In this episode, Sonic loses his iconic red sneakers, and as such can no longer run at his usual supersonic speeds without hurting his feet.
  • Sore Loser: Robotnik does not take well to losing card games against his robots. Whenever one wins, he shoots at the robot repeatedly, yelling, "I don't remember programming you to beat me!", and tosses the robot into a pile of other discarded robots who presumably won against him and suffered the same consequences.
  • Squashed Flat: When Sonic tricks Scratch and Grounder into flattening the ramps for the charity speed benefit, Scratch and Grounder end up getting flattened by the Robo-roller Robotnik sent them to destroy MacGuffin with. Their flattened selves fly into an envelope, which Sonic puts in a mailbox, calling it junk mail.
  • Unreliable Narrator: When Coconuts tells his story to Sonic and Tails, he claimed he fell asleep because he was so tired from beating the other guy trying to get Sonic and Tails in their sleep. The actual flashback shows that Coconuts just stood there in the closet and let the hose spray him with sleeping gas.
  • Visual Pun: Harry the Hawker is an anthropomorphic hawk.
