The first episode of Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.

In an attempt to escape from one of Scratch and Grounder's traps, Sonic tells Scratch and Grounder the story of how Dr. Robotnik created them to be part of the Super Special Sonic Search and Smash Squad.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Alliterative Name: The titular Super Special Sonic Search and Smash Squad.
  • And Knowing Is Half the Battle: In the "Sonic Says" segment, Sonic teaches Tails to call 911 only in the case of a real emergency.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: When listing Sonic's offenses, Robotnik tells his robots that Sonic ruins his schemes, he escapes his traps, and he helps nice people.
  • Big Ball of Violence: When Robotnik spots Sonic at the Bounty Hunter's convention, the two robots he is sitting next to gang up on him, creating one of these. Sonic manages to escape from it easily.
  • Broken Aesop: This episode's aesop about the importance of reserving 911 for emergencies is broken by Sonic using two robots attempting to kill him as an example of what not to waste 911's time with. Sonic can defeat them fairly easily, but "don't call 911 if you think you can probably handle the life threatening situation" isn't nearly so great a message for helpless kids. It's presumably this reason why a later episode corrected the Aesop.
  • The Cameo: Many of Robotnik's robots from Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine appear in this episode.
  • Circling Birdies: Cuckoo clocks fly around Grounder's head after Scratch kicks a rock at his head.
  • Clueless Aesop: This episode's "Sonic Says" segment showed Sonic and Tails surrounded by Badniks. Tails suggests they call 911 and Sonic tells him not to do that unless it's a real emergency. Although Sonic is very capable of trashing an army of Badniks, children could very easily get the wrong impression and think that Good Old Fisticuffs is the right approach when surrounded by bigger, stronger, and possibly armed attackers.
    • Possibly, the writers themselves realized that this was a stupid lesson to teach kids, so in a later Sonic Says, Tails is being chased by Badniks, and calls for help by a nearby police officer. He arrests the Badniks, and Sonic congratulates Tails for doing the right thing.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: Scratch uses this (through a female Mobian hand puppet) to lure Sonic into a trap. It almost works.
  • Disney Villain Death: Frankly, Skweel, and Dynamight all fall off a cliff after Sonic, disguised as a ringmaster, tricks them into going into a phony circus tent.
Sonic: Guess you guys won't be staying for a second show!
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: The rivalry among Robotnik's robots seems to be a reference to sibling rivalry. "He made me first! I'm his favorite!".
  • The Dreaded Toilet Duty: In Coconuts' first scene, Coconuts complains about Robotnik demoting him to sanitation duty while holding a plunger. When he hears that Robotnik has created Scratch and Grounder to be the first members of the S.S.S.S.S. Squad, he tries to capture Sonic by himself in the hopes of getting on Robotnik's good side and promoted to the head of the S.S.S.S.S. Squad.
  • Gone Horribly Wrong: Robotnik decides to create robots capable of being as fierce, evil, and smart as him. Instead, the end result is Scratch and Grounder who, while as effective as he hoped, are quite dimwitted and comical.
  • High-Pressure Emotion: Robotnik's head turns into a steam whistle when Scratch pulls a lever that wasn't supposed to be pulled during a cloning process.
  • Hypocrite: The evil robot asking a female civilian (whose house he invaded through brute strength) where the bounty hunter's convention is. His reaction when the female Mobian civilian runs away from him screaming:
Robot: People around here aren't very friendly in this town. Guess I'll just have find it myself! (Smashes through the wall)
  • Ignored Enamored Underling: Coconuts. More so than the S.S.S.S.S. Squad, and he's desperate to be Robotnik's No.1 creation.
  • Inventional Wisdom: During a cloning process, Scratch pulls a lever that wasn't supposed to be pulled, which begs the question of why Robotnik has that lever in the first place.
  • Look Behind You: At the Bounty Hunters' convention, Sonic distracts one of Robotnik's more dim-witted robots simply by running up to it and telling it, "I'm over there!"
  • The Millstone: A villainous example with Coconuts. Scratch and Grounder actually manage to capture Sonic and lock him in a cage. Then Coconuts ties them up, so that he can claim the reward. Sonic points out to him that the rope could break any second and suggests putting Scratch and Grounder in the cage. Coconuts does so and Sonic escapes, locking all three robots in the cage.
  • Near-Villain Victory: Scratch and Grounder catch Tails, forcing Sonic to give himself up lest Tails be hurt. Both of them are successfully imprisoned with no escape in sight and the two robots call Robotnik in to claim their reward. Their scheme only fails because Coconuts wants to take credit and Sonic successfully tricks the monkey into releasing him. Had Coconuts not interfered, Robotnik would've won before the show even hit its second episode! Of course, being that it was an Origins Episode being told by Sonic, it's only natural things turned out the way they did.
  • Never Say "Die": At the Bounty Hunters' convention, Robotnik tells his robots that he is offering 1,000,000,000 Mobiums for Sonic's capture, alive... or otherwise.
  • Noodle Incident: In Coconuts' introductory scene, Coconuts tells the viewers that Robotnik demoted him to sanitation duty. He doesn't say how he got stuck with that job, but it may have something to do with his initial failure to catch Sonic or help Robotnik take over Mobius.
  • Origins Episode: This episode explains the origin of how Scratch and Grounder (and by extension, the S.S.S.S.S. Squad) were created.
  • Painted Tunnel, Real Train: Scratch and Grounder try to paint a background on a wall in order to catch Sonic. They fail miserably at it.
  • Prank Call: Lampshaded by Sonic in the "Sonic Says" segment when Tails asks him to call 911, just after they've easily evaded Dr. Robotnik's robots.
Sonic: Remember, don’t call 911 if there isn’t a fire, crime or anything dangerous! Somebody’s dumb joke could be another person’s disaster!
  • Produce Pelting: Sonic throws a tomato at his own picture when he hides out at Robotnik's Bounty Hunter's convention.
  • Third-Person Flashback: The flashback includes Robotnik creating Scratch and Grounder, an event Sonic wasn't around to see.
  • Trouser Space: At the Bounty Hunter's convention, Robotnik pulls the remote control that opens the curtains to reveal Sonic's picture out of his pants.
  • Whole Episode Flashback: A majority of this episode's events are told through a flashback from Sonic in an attempt to escape from one of Scratch and Grounder's traps.
  • William Telling: Sonic does this to Dragon Breath. Getting up in Robin Hood garb and balancing an apple on his head, Sonic tauntingly asks Dragon Breath if he's ever heard of William Tell. Infuriated, Dragon Breath throws his spiked club at Sonic, but the hedgehog's super speeds allows him to dodge just in time, so that the only damage done is that apple is split in half... and the tree behind Sonic falls over onto Dragon Breath.
