Finn finds an old truck, and Jake calls Banana Man to help with the repairs. But when BMO stays up all night working on the truck, he hears on a spooky radio talk show that Princess Bubblegum is a reptilian replicate.

Tropes

  • Artistic License – Engineering: Banana Man explains how a petrol engine works, but the truck is then stated to run on diesel (which means it wouldn't have spark plugs).
  • Ascended Extra: Banana Man gets A Day in the Limelight in this episode.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: The Bubblegum impostor's true form is a large pink lizard.
  • Audience? What Audience?: As Banana Man is explaining what a cylinder head is, a blueprint-style diagram of an engine appears next to him which apparently only he and the audience can see.
Finn: [to Jake] What is he pointing at?
  • Bait-and-Switch Comment: After Banana Man helps Finn, Jake, and BMO take down the lizard monster, the female Banana Guard comes up to him and tells him “You’re coming with me!” in a flirtatious manner. However, she then clarifies that he’s coming with her to jail for public indecency due to not having his peel on.
  • Banana Peel: To cause the truck to go spinning over a ramp and hit the giant lizard Princess Bubblegum, Finn rips off Banana Man’s peel and throws it under the truck’s wheel.
  • Call-Back: Banana Man from The New Frontier is called in by Jake to fix the truck.
  • Can-Crushing Cranium: BMO does this as the group finishes their sodas after a day of working on the truck.
  • Car Fu: Finn launches the truck at the lizard monster to stop it from attacking the Candy Kingdom.
  • Chekhov's Skill: If a banana can make a functioning rocket, surely he knows about auto mechanics, right?
  • Continuity Nod: Banana Man notes that Jake once destroyed his land, home and rocket in his attempt to commit suicide as prophesied by the Cosmic Owl.
  • The Cuckoolander Was Right: Starchy and BMO turn out to be right about PB having been replaced by a lizard.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Banana Man from "The New Frontier" gets to be one of the main cast in this episode.
  • Every Car Is a Pinto: After being crashed into the giant lizard, “Hot Daniel” the truck lays in the middle of the Candy Kingdom covered in flames.
  • Fake King: Double Subverted. Starchy suggests that PB has been replaced by a shape-shifting lizardoid imposter, in a reference to common conspiracy theories, but it turns out to be true.
  • Friendship Song: While working on the truck with Finn, Jake, and BMO, Banana Man sings a song about how he’s hoping this activity will make them want to be friends with him and then they’ll all hang out together forever.
  • Good Behavior Points: Banana Man gives BMO a gold star when he gets an answer right during his lesson about engines.
  • Hand-or-Object Underwear: Banana Man blushes and covers himself with his hands when the female Banana Guard points out his lack of a peel.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: Banana Man turns out to be very lonely.
  • Imposter Exposing Test: BMO, suspecting that Princess Bubblegum is really a lizard person, offers her a ladybug to eat. Unable to resist, a forked tongue comes out of PB’s mouth and gobbles it up.
  • Instructional Dialogue: Banana Man gives a lecture on how petrol-engine cylinders work.
  • Non-Mammal Mammaries: The female Banana Guard has breasts.
  • Reptiles Are Abhorrent: The Bubblegum impostor who mimics the real one.
  • Reptilian Conspiracy: A caller on Starchy’s radio show accuses Princess Bubblegum of being replaced by a lizard person. This Conspiracy Theorist turns out to be correct as the group later discovers.
  • Series Continuity Error: Cinnamon Bun is in the mob chasing PB, despite choosing to stay in the Fire Kingdom in "Earth & Water".
  • ShapeShifting: The Bubblegum impostor could perfectly mimic Bubblegum until BMO reveals its identity by tempting it with an insect.
  • Shout-Out:
    • When BMO searches their memory for information on fixing cars, their screen displays a waving flashlight. This is a reference to the waving flashlight icon displayed when searching for files in Windows 98.
    • Starchy's late-night radio show “Graveyard Shift" is a reference to Coast to Coast AM, a talk and call-in show which frequently deals with paranormal and conspiracy topics, notably including David Icke's "reptoid hypothesis."
  • Show Within a Show: BMO and Banana Man listen to "Graveyard Shift", a late-night cryptid/conspiracy show hosted by Starchy the Gravedigger, where they learn about the conspiracy that Princess Bubblegum has been replaced by a lizard-person.
  • The Smurfette Principle: There's a token girl Banana Guard that Banana Man falls for.
  • Special Guest: “Weird Al” Yankovic returns as Banana Man and even gets to sing in this episode.
  • Torches and Pitchforks: As Finn, Jake, BMO, & Banana Man enter the Candy Kingdom, they see Princess Bubblegum being chased by an angry mob wielding torches and pitchforks.
  • Unusual Euphemism:
    Princess Bubblegum: What the fridge?!
