Starchy falls sick and will only accept magic as treatment, forcing Princess Bubblegum, Finn, and Jake to sneak into Wizard City to retrieve a cure.

Tropes

  • Arbitrary Skepticism: Princess Bubblegum refuses to admit that magic exists, and insists it's just science obfuscated with mumbo-jumbo. This is in spite of the fact that one of her friends is a half-vampire/half-demon who is the daughter of a demon lord, one of her associates is a ghost princess, Death is an actual character in the show, and multiple afterlives (called "Dead Worlds") are stated by ghosts and Death to exist.
  • Ascended Extra: Abracadaniel has a much bigger role in this episode.
  • A Wizard Did It: When Princess Bubblegum asks Ron James about how the cold spell works and what it's made from his only answer is "magic". Princess Bubblegum is understandably annoyed.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: As soft and unconfrontational as Abracadaniel is, he is angered enough by PB's actions sending him to prison to attempt to fight her.
  • Bowdlerisation: Some versions of the episode cut Ice King pathetically getting off on PB touching him while she tortures him, and Finn's speculation that she might be naked under her Power Armour.
  • Call-Back: Wizard City is off-limits towards non-wizards, something Ice King said when he went there in "Reign of Gunters". Finn, Jake and PB have to wear disguises to avoid being recognized and are sent to prison when they're discovered.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Starchy refusing to use Bubblegum's medicine in favor of magic when he is sick, followed by taking it personally when Bubblegum makes fun of the idea, is a lot like when people in Real Life prefer faith-healing and alternative medicine instead of medical science and the advice of doctors and other medical professionals. Nurse Poundcake, Finn and Jake represent those who want to compromise between the two sides, refusing to side with Bubblegum on her notion despite trusting Bubblegum's expertise (and in Poundcake's case, actually being a medical professional).
Starchy: Princess, you're being disrespectful of my beliefs.
Nurse Poundcake: That was very close-minded.
  • Forced Transformation: Finn, Jake, and PB witness a wizard impersonator who got caught by the guard get turned into a wooden staff.
  • Good Is Not Nice: Jake and Finn are ashamed that Bubblegum resorted to violence to force Ice King into revealing the secret password.
  • Honor Before Reason: So much would've been avoided if Bubblegum had swallowed her pride and admitted that sorcery exists.
  • Invisibility: Ice King has been shown to have this power, and uses it to spy on Bufo, Laser Wizard, and Forest Wizard's secret society.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: While her objection was mostly about her stubborn refusal to believe in magic, Princess Bubblegum did have a valid point that Ron James was trying to sell a product without properly explaining what it was made from other then "magic".
  • Jack Bauer Interrogation Technique: Used by Bubblegum on Ice King to force the password out of him.
  • Knife Fight: Abracadaniel challenges Bubblegum to a fight in the prison cafeteria.
  • Magic Versus Science: The wizards and Starchy supporting magic and Bubblegum supporting science as always.
  • The Man Makes the Weapon: Abracadaniel and Bubblegum duel in the prison with respectively a fork, and a chicken foot from the soup.
  • Power Armour: Princess Bubblegum's wizard costume is this.
  • Series Continuity Error: Princess Bubblegum believes that magic is just science, which doesn't match her behavior from earlier in the series, both her showing no such issue with magic in "Wizard Battle" when offering a kiss to the winner of the titular battle, and seemingly using it herself to make bread in "Five Short Graybles".
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: The "cold spell" turns out to be a spell that generates cold, not one that cures a cold. So they end up having to trick Starchy into taking his medicine by having Abracadaniel distract him with a light show.
  • Shout-Out: Jake's secret compartment to hide the cold spell is similar to that used by Bender in Futurama.
  • Spy Catsuit: Princess Bubblegum wears a strapless jumpsuit under her Power Armour (leading Finn to assume she's naked).

No medicine, only magic

Starchy refusing to use Bubblegum's medicine in favor of magic when he is sick, followed by taking it personally when Bubblegum makes fun of the idea, is a lot like when people in Real Life prefer faith-healing and alternative medicine instead of medical science and the advice of doctors and other medical professionals. How well does it match the trope?
