On Finn's birthday, an ordinary train ride becomes a murder mystery when several candy skeletons are found on board.

Tropes:

  • Bat Deduction: Finn accuses one of the other passengers of being behind the murders based on random words in the dictionary she was reading.
  • Big "NO!": Finn gets one when he suddenly is found to be holding Jake's skeleton, believing that Jake has been murdered like all the others.
  • Birthday Episode: Jake and the Candy People throw a party to help Finn celebrate his birthday. People start dying before they even get there.
  • Curse Cut Short: When one of Finn's suspects ends up dead.
    Finn: Son of a—!
(Cut to the outside of the train as the whistle blows)
  • Fake Mystery: There was never any murderer, it was a practical joke by Jake as a present to Finn with the rest of the passengers in on it. The broken track was not part of the plan, though thankfully everything works out.
  • Lights Off, Somebody Dies: Each time a train goes through a tunnel, a passenger gets Stripped to the Bone.
  • Never the Obvious Suspect: Subverted and Parodied, Finn was certain the creepy and mysterious conductor couldn't be the killer solely because of this trope, in the end it was him but not really because it was all a prank.
  • Shout-Out:
    • "Mystery Train" is a famously enigmatic R&B song with a lot of creepy interpretations. The best known versions are by Junior Parker and Elvis Presley, and it was also the title of a famous book of highbrow rock criticism by Greil Marcus.
    • To Soul Eater. The conductor skateboarding around the train is a reference to Death the Kid doing it in one episode of his series.
    • The train passengers being turned into skeletons is a shout-out to the famous Adam Adamant Lives! episode "A Ticket to Terror".
  • Thriller on the Express: The plot of the episode takes place on one.
  • Traintop Battle: Finn and the creepy conductor have one when the latter is suspected for the murders.
