Finn and Jake search for a book that contains vital adventurer knowledge.

"The Enchiridion!" contains examples of:

  • Actor Allusion: Being voiced by John Moschitta, former record holder for World's Fastest Talker and better known as the Micro Machines Man, the Keyper is naturally a Motor Mouth.
  • Battle in the Center of the Mind: The Enchiridion's keeper makes Finn go into his "brain world" to fight a part of himself he's not entirely aware of.
  • Big "NEVER!":
    • When Finn is asked to slay an "unaligned ant":
      Finn: Never... never... NEVERRRRRRR!!!
    • Finn screams "NEVER!" again just before he punches the Keyper in the gut.
  • Big "YES!": Finn drops one at the end, after achieving his goal.
  • Bowdlerize: The original title card for "The Enchiridion!" was violent, though not bloody. The artists had a Censor Decoy that was worse than that in case the censors foolishly chose the bloody version over the non-bloody, but still violent version (and this being the Cartoon Network censors, one would expect them to do just that). Surprisingly, both were rejected and the artists were forced to make the more lighthearted version you see on this page.
  • Brick Joke: Jake assures Finn that the old ladies the gnomes were destroying were just illusions, and part of the trials of Mt. Cragdor. The fact that two of them suddenly appear at Mannish Man's picnic at the end implies he was right.
  • Burp of Finality: The giant ogre assumes this to be the case when Jake falls into his stomach, causing him to burp. Subverted when he regurgitates Jake due to Finn's Groin Attack.
  • Catch a Falling Star: Finn rescues a falling Princess Bubblegum by catching her... when she was already only a yard from the ground.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: Cinnamon Bun's voice is different from how it'll be in later episodes, sounding higher-pitched and more nasal.
  • Groin Attack: Finn gets the giant that swallows Jake to cough him back up by kicking said giant in the junk. He also delivers a groin-kick to the skeletal guardian who tries to get him to slay an unaligned ant. Later, Mannish Man compliments Finn on his "nard-kicking ability".
  • Innocuously Important Episode: A goofy, one-off episode. That introduces one of the most important items in the series. Then again, it's implied that this episode was originally meant to be the first one aired.
  • Kick the Dog: Finn saves three flying gnomes from a lava pit, only for them to kill several old ladies. Jake responds by rounding them up and throwing them right back into the lava pit.
  • Lovable Jock: Despite being a jacked minotaur tasked with guarding the legendary Enchiridion, Mannish Man is a fun-loving guy who's legitimately amazed by Finn's heroic feats.
  • Motor Mouth: The Keyper talks very fast in his spiel when he greets Finn and Jake at the gates of Mt. Cragdor.
  • The Nose Knows: Jake manages to smell out the Enchiridion from the bottom of Mt. Cragdor, up to including where it is.
  • Secret Test of Character: Everything Finn and Jake encounter on the way to the Enchiridion.
Jake: This place is designed to mess you up.
  • Stealth Pun: When Mannish Man flexes his muscles, one of them takes the shape of a flexing arm. He literally has muscles on his muscles.
  • To Be Lawful or Good: When Finn is told that his final trial is to kill an ant, he refuses to honor the trial because the ant is neutral, and he refuses to slay anything that isn't evil.

The Unaligned Ant

Finn is asked to slay a harmless yet 'neutral' ant during his last trial of receiving the Enchiridion, but he refuses, kicking the skeleton guardian in the groin. In the heat of the moment, Finn ends up also attacking the Keyper by accident, who is dressed in devil pajamas.

How well does it match the trope?
