Luz looked at Lilith with befuddlement, before her expression turned to one of irritation.
"You're telling me you don't see the similarities…they don't ring any bells??"
Lilith and most of the others shook their heads, looking at Luz wide eyed and confused. Luz gave out a short laugh and pinched her eyes closed. She looked at Eda, who gave Luz an expression of understanding. She knew what Luz was getting at. She turned to the others with a sigh.
"She's talking about how Belos is pulling a slightly toned-down Hitler."
They looked at Eda and Luz in surprise before their expressions changed to ones of various degrees of horror. It was all there, the cult of personality, the "divine message/purpose", the incorporation of all parts of life under the coven system and his direct authority, the uniformed Isle-wide guards and soldiers that enforced Belos's rule without any oversight, the hunting and attempted eradication of a large subsect of witches, and the unethical execution and treatment of prisoners. Heck, the experimentation thing wasn't far off considering what he had done with bringing the basilisks back from extinction. They had all been exposed to this from the moment they were born, and they felt terrible for not doing anything about it now, for not questioning the things they should have questioned.

At the end of these bone roads are the volcano complexes where the geothermic energy is farmed. The tau captives are marched into these underground lairs and either herded onto high platforms or pushed onto crude transit belts. Electric currents often flow through these conveyors, their charge enough to stun the tau and prevent them breaking free. Then the unfortunate captives are simply carried over the edge of mechanical cliffs to fall into the magma, each xenos civilian burning bright yellow as he or she sinks into the molten rock. The Adeptus Mechanicus claim detachment, as usual. They say they are simply adding fuel, the better to power the steam engines high above. But I know better. This is a lesson, a statement so vile and extreme it will be carried by word of mouth across the Damocles Gulf and still further afield. The message is clear enough – those who sought to take advantage of the Imperium will find themselves on the pyre, becoming part of humanity’s great war machine in a far more direct fashion than they intended.
