Basic Trope: A character shows how much they know another character by giving them their favorite food.
- Straight: Bob is feeling down, so Alice gives his favorite dish, fish and chips and a Coke.
- Exaggerated:
- Any time Bob's mood doesn't seems quite right, Alice gives him fish and chips, using fish caught at a certain lake and fries cut at a certain size and fried for a certain time, along with a Coke from a certain glass served at a certain temperature. Bob is always cheered up by this.
- When Bob's favorite restaurant closes down, Alice tracks down the former cooks and asks them how to make Bob's favorite dish so she can make it herself.
- Downplayed: Alice gets Bob fish and chips and a Coke, which is not his very favorite, but he does like it and appreciates the effort.
- Justified: Alice is used to seeing Bob eating his favorite dish, and mentioning that he likes it.
- Inverted:
- Alice gets Bob her favorite food, showing how she only thinks of herself.
- Alice gets Bob something he hates as a joke, and he is impressed she knows him that well.
- Subverted:
- Alice tells Bob she got him his favorite food, only for him to reveal it isn't his favorite.
- While Alice did the research, what she ended up with was his childhood (age 6 to 12) favorite, which he can't believe he ever tolerated, let alone liked.
- Double Subverted:
- That was Alice's food. She then brings him his favorite.
- Bob rediscovers why it was his childhood favorite, as Alice cooked it like his mother did, instead of following the pale imitations his father made after his mother passed away.
- Parodied: Alice somehow comes to the conclusion that Bob's favorite is a lego piece he nearly choked to death on as a child, and decides to serve that specific lego to him. He's very flattered by the effort that tracking that lego piece down must've taken her.
