Playing With / Will Not Tell a Lie

Basic Trope: A character will not tell a lie.

  • Straight: Alice never lies.
  • Exaggerated: Alice is brutally honest at all times.
  • Downplayed: Alice doesn't outright lie, but she will often leave a part of the truth out if it suits her.
  • Justified:
    • Alice doesn't lie because it goes against her religion or her own moral values.
    • Alice doesn't lie because it's illegal where she lives.
    • Alice has been lied to her entire life by people she trusted and she vows to not become like them.
  • Inverted: Alice is a Consummate Liar.
  • Subverted: Alice doesn't lie under most circumstances, but she will if she thinks that it'll lead to a better outcome for her and those around her.
  • Double Subverted: Yet she cannot bring herself to tell a lie.
  • Parodied: Alice is physically unable to tell a lie. When asked a paradoxical question, her head explodes.
  • Zig-Zagged: Sometimes Alice is honest, sometimes Alice lies, sometimes a mix of both.
  • Averted: Alice has no pattern of lying or telling the truth.
  • Enforced: ???
  • Lampshaded: "How can this bitch be questioned by pigs and never tell a lie, nigga?"
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: Bob interrogates Alice, knowing that she won’t lie to him.
  • Defied: Alice would rather tell a lie if it means earning others' trust.
  • Discussed: "Yeah, I don’t really lie. It just feels wrong. I don’t want to deceive people."
  • Conversed: ???
  • Deconstructed: While Alice never lies, not even those around her would believe her truths.
  • Reconstructed: There is a meaning behind Alice's truths, and she regains the trust of those around her.
  • Played For Drama: Alice is put into multiple situations where telling the truth could result in harm to herself or her friends, and has to grapple with the moral conflict she feels when she’s forced to lie.
