Basic Trope: A word or name is mistaken for a common word, leading to confusion.

  • Straight: Alice says to Hu, "Who are you?". He replies, "Yes," confusing her.
  • Exaggerated: Alice is introduced to Hu, Yoo, Wai, Watt, and Wen.
  • Downplayed:
    Alice: Do I turn left?
    Bob: Rig...I mean, correct.
  • Justified: Well, it's easy to get puzzled with a man named Hu.
  • Inverted: "Alice" is a common word in Hu's native language.
  • Subverted:
    Alice: Who are you?
Hu: Yes... just kidding, my name's actually Hu.
  • Double Subverted: But then, he says to his sister Wen, "Wen, are you coming to the concert?", which causes more confusion.
  • Parodied: Will has no idea what the phrase "Fire at will!" actually means, and becomes completely hysterical whenever he hears it.
  • Zig-Zagged: Sometimes, people mistake "Hu" for "Who", and vice versa, other times not.
  • Averted: Characters in the story have names like Hu, Yoo, Wai, Watt, and Wen, and yet characters have no communication issues despite how those words sound like pronouns.
  • Enforced: "This is a comedy, and he's called Hu. We have to make a joke out of that!"
  • Lampshaded: "I always have trouble with my name."
  • Invoked: Hu's parents name him that as a joke.
  • Exploited: Hu steals from Charles because when Charles says, "Hu did it," they'd think he didn't know or was insane.
  • Defied:
    • When Alice says, "Hu are you?", Hu says, "My name is actually Hu."
    • Diane is pregnant and suggests Hu for a name. Edward tells her no, because it'd cause too much confusion.
    • After Hu introduces herself, the other characters immediately give Hu a nickname or go for her last (or middle name) basis.
  • Discussed: "What would it be like if there was a guy named Hu?! Can you imagine? 'Hu's there'!"
  • Conversed: "Haha! I know it's been done but that word confusion gag is still hilarious to this day!"
  • Implied: The phrase "Who went to the store" is overheard, and the tone is not a questioning one.
  • Deconstructed: ???
  • Reconstructed: ???
  • Played for Laughs: A Running Gag is confusion with Hu's name.
  • Played for Drama: Poor Communication Kills
  • Played for Horror: Someone warns Alice "You will die." Alice and her friends scramble to find out the threat, only to find out to late that Yoo was the one in danger.
