Playing With / Uranus Is Showing

Go To

Basic Trope: Joking about the name of the planet Uranus, because it sounds like "your anus."

  • Straight: Alice is wearing a dress with many celestial bodies printed on it. Bob talks about planets printed on the dress he recognizes and says, "Wow, they've got Mercury in there, they've got Mars in there ... could they fit Uranus in there?!"
  • Exaggerated:
    • Alice wears an outfit will all the bodies of the Solar System printed on it. Uranus is clearly located on the seat of her pants.
    • "Uranus" jokes are shoehorned into every situation that even remotely involves astronomy. To boot, even the most mature characters chuckle.
  • Downplayed: Alice points out the planets on her dress. When she gets to Uranus, Bob quietly smirks.
  • Justified: Bob (and possibly Alice too) like/s both astronomy and Toilet Humor.
  • Inverted: Bob jokes about the name of every planet in our solar system except Uranus.
  • Subverted: Bob did not mean that as a joke.
  • Double Subverted: It doesn't matter. Everyone finds it funny now, even him.
  • Parodied:
    • Bob tries to make a Uranus joke. It fails because he's not speaking English, so the joke is Lost in Translation. Everyone just ends up confused.
    • Bob, forgetting which planet is used for dirty jokes, awkwardly tries to make a dirty joke about Neptune.
  • Zig-Zagged: The planet Uranus is mentioned several times, sometimes there's a joke, sometimes there isn't, and sometimes it is unclear if the joke was intentional or not.
  • Averted:
    • Nobody jokes about Uranus.
    • There are no jokes about astronomy.
  • Enforced: "There's a stereotype that nerds are boring people with No Sense of Humor. Let's shake that by having Bob be able to geek out about astronomy and tell immature jokes at the same time. And what better way than to make a 'Uranus' joke?"
  • Lampshaded: "Seriously, another Uranus joke?"
  • Invoked: "Yes, a certain planet is missing from my dress. Get those stupid jokes out of your system already."
  • Exploited: Alice, Bob, and their classmates are going to do a presentation about the planets of the Solar System. Bob, wanting to get revenge on Alice for whatever reason, makes sure she gets Uranus so she has to face the countless "Uranus" jokes.
  • Defied:
    • Both Alice and Bob refuse to tell jokes about Uranus' name.
    • Alice demands that everyone pronounce it "YOOR-en-us" to prevent inappropriate jokes.
    • Alice doesn't wear the space-themed dress that lacks Uranus because she figures someone will make this joke.
    • Astronomers rename Uranus to end the joke once and for all.note
    • Astronomers rename Uranus to Ouranos (OUR-ran-os), ending the joke without starting a new one.note
  • Discussed:
Alice: I'm wearing my space-themed dress; what's to bet Bob's gonna tell a joke about Uranus?
Mike: I'll bet fifty he tells one in the first minute after he shows up, a hundred he tells one in the first five.
  • Conversed: "This show has so many 'Uranus' jokes."
  • Implied: Several kids are shown giggling in the middle of a lesson about the Solar System.
  • Deconstructed: The constant giggling leads to no one taking astronomers seriously.
  • Reconstructed: The astronomical community actually uses Uranus jokes as a Secret Test of Character: everybody who stays after they've had their cheap laughs is taken to be truly committed.
  • Played for Laughs:
    • Toilet Humor.
    • Charles, an astronomy teacher, does a Face Palm when his class burst out laughing upon hearing Uranus' name.
    • Cringe Comedy happens when Alice must give a speech but is too embarrassed to say Uranus' name.
    • Bob likes to daydream about being a superhero whose Atrocious Alias is "Destroyer of Uranus."
  • Played for Drama: Alice is trying to give an important presentation about the Solar System, but it goes wrong when she makes an Accidental Innuendo, earns the audience's ridicule, and becomes too nervous and ashamed to continue.
  • Untwisted: Alice thinks her classmates are going to laugh at her when she says "Uranus", but they don't ... at least not aloud. However, they all passed notes to each other at that moment with "Ha, ha, ha!" written on them.

Uranus Is Showing! Heh heh...
