Basic Trope: A character has, in addition to their given name, a surname that also serves well as a first name.
- Straight: Alice Brooke and Bob Alexander.
- Exaggerated: The character also has a middle name that they frequently use or refer to, e.g. "Alice Claire Brooke" or "Bob Tom Alexander".
- Downplayed: Alice Williamson and Bob Jeffries.
- Justified: The character's last name was originally a first name.
- Inverted: Anderson Smith and Barrymore Jones.
- Subverted: Bob finds Alice's birth certificate and learns that Brooke is her middle name; her real surname is Bastard.
- Double Subverted: It is revealed that while Alice (who is single) was born Alice Brooke Bastard, she recently had her last name legally changed because she was fed up with being ridiculed for it.
- Parodied: A nonsense name, like Zonch or Gleep, is used as the first name of one character and the last name of another. Most other characters have generic names.
- Zig Zagged: Anderson Smith and Bob Alexander.
- Averted: Alice Jones and Bob Smith.
- Enforced: The writers are used to writing stories in which the characters have Only One Name each, so they don't do well at coming up with last names.
- Lampshaded: "And this is Alice Brooke, my friend with Two First Names."
- Invoked: Alice changes her last name to Carol.
- Exploited: ???
- Defied: Alice changes her last name to Garrett.
- Discussed: "Do any of your friends have two first names? You know, like 'Alice Brooke' or something?" "No. All my friends' last names are only used as last names."
- Conversed: "Why do so many of the characters on this show have Two First Names?"
- Implied: Alice's last name is never mentioned, but Bob says that when they met, he thought her last name was her first.
- Played For Laughs: Alice has a sense of humor about her last name.
- Played For Drama: Everyone teases Alice because of her name, and she becomes an outcast.
