Playing With / The Magic Versus Technology War

Go To

Basic Trope: Two factions, one technological and one magical, are in a direct conflict.

  • Straight: The Republic of Technocrats (RT) and Magocracy Union (MU) are actively at war with each other.
  • Exaggerated: Republic of Technocrats has been at war with Magocracy Union for over a thousand years, and both sides have relatively advanced weapons such as gargantuan combat motherships with full shipyard capacity and colossal magic circles that act as mobile barracks for high-end mages.
  • Downplayed:
    • The conflict between RT and MU technically is more of an Arms Race.
    • RT and MU have previously had wars before, but are currently in a mutual state of contentious peace.
    • RT and MU are merging into one nation body, but their respective civilians do not welcome this and start civil wars with each other due to ideological differences.
    • RT and MU specialize in science and magic, but each nation uses both to some degree.
  • Justified:
    • The Republic of Technocrats view that mages, with their vast stocks of power concentrated into a single person, could shake the foundation of civilization (since all civilizations require collective efforts) and lead to a literal "strong eats weak" cruel society. RT is merely preventing this nightmare from becoming reality.
    • The Magocracy Union, while generally not malvolent, is operated on the belief of magic itself. As people stray towards technology, the existence of magic is threatened. Hence, they started the war in order to preserve magic’s continued existence.
    • Both sides simply wanted each other's good stuff.
  • Inverted: RT and MU have been long-standing allied countries for a very long time, they eventually merge into an Interstellar One-World Human Government.
  • Subverted:
  • Double Subverted:
    • One side of the two decided to revert back to the radical "Tech/Mage is Supreme" ideology and start the offense.
    • Either side has some inconveniences that hamper each other's opposing weaponry from being used such as magic causing electronics to blow up or technology being able to prevent magic from being conjured, forcing the two sides to focus on their own respective specialties.
    • The Cold War between the two nations went hotter, and one side decided to test their weapons on their opponents.
  • Implied: RT and MU's forces are the border between their respective nations, with their weapons perpetually aimed at each other.
  • Lampshaded: RT and MU's representatives are angry over an issue, while both nations have declared the intentions of expanding their military power.
  • Zig-Zagged: RT and MU's backstory is pretty similar to real life nations throughout history: Sometimes warring, sometimes competing, sometimes cooperating. In general, their relations are pretty shaky.
  • Defied:
    • The Human Government, finding out somehow the so-called supernatural reports have been recently increasing and are verified to be real, decided to draft out various ways to avoid separatism resulting from this phenomena.
    • RT and MU realize that starting a war with each other over ideology is pointless and decide to sign a Non-Aggression Pact in order to preserve peace.
    • RT and MU, still in the process of merging into a One-World-Government, make cooperative efforts on cracking down insurgent activities that threaten to split them apart.
