Playing With / Son of an Ape

Go To

Basic Trope: Someone insults a human by calling them (or comparing them to) an ape or monkey.

  • Straight: Archer, a tiger-person, regularly refers to humans as "hairless apes".
  • Exaggerated: Archer always insists that all humans are actually apes/monkeys, even though he knows for a fact that they aren't.
  • Downplayed: Archer does occasionally compare people to apes/monkeys, but only as an insult.
  • Justified: Humans are actually closely related to monkeys and apes, so it's understandable that a non-human would compare them to primates as a result (especially in the case of Archer, who is an anthropomorphic tiger and has likely seen a monkey before).
  • Inverted:
    • Someone compares a monkey or ape to a human.
    • Archer compares humans to monkeys and apes in praise, because he believes that monkeys and apes are rather smart animals.
    • Someone calls Archer a son of a tiger.
  • Subverted:
  • Double Subverted:
    • It turns out he was lying.
    • After Archer learns what people are, he still compares them to monkeys when he's mad at them.
    • "...Still, you are acting like a monkey."
  • Parodied: Archer insults an anthropomorphic monkey by comparing him to monkeys. It takes him a moment to realize why that's not really an "insult" anyway.
  • Zig-Zagged: ???
  • Averted: Nobody ever compares humans to primates.
  • Enforced: "You know, if there's some sort of non-human who doesn't like humans in any way, they're almost always gonna compare people to apes - Archer believes that humans are inferior to Beast Men, so why not have him say so?"
  • Lampshaded: "What are you doing, you stupid little apeman?!?!"
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: "Archer, if you call another person a "hairless ape", I'm not letting you play with the ball of yarn tonight."
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: "Archer believes Beast Men are superior to humans, so why in the world is he calling people "apes" as an insult? Aren't there primate-like Beast Men, too?"
  • Implied: Someone mentions that the last time they met Archer, he compared them to a primate.
  • Played for Laughs: Archer calls a human a monkey. Said human climbs to the top of a tree and eats fruit from it, before saying "No I'm not."
  • Played for Drama: Archer ends up being More Insulting than Intended, because he calls someone a monkey despite "monkey" being an offensive term to that racial group.
