Basic Trope: Characters throw lumps of snow at each other.

  • Straight: On an episode of Wacky Homeroom High, it's a snow day, and Alice and Bob start throwing snowballs at each other.
  • Exaggerated: The battle lasts several hours and involves almost every child in town (and more than a few adults).
  • Downplayed: Alice and Bob throw a few handfuls of snow, but it doesn't turn into a full-blown snowball fight.
  • Justified: Truth in Television, this trope is kept alive by schoolchildren wherever there is snow.
  • Inverted:
    • In a desert, Alice and Bob start throwing handfuls of sand at each other.
    • Snow monsters throw people at each other.
  • Subverted:
    • Alice and Bob start circling each other, snowballs held in hand.... but then they drop the snowballs and continue peacefully on their way.
    • Bob tosses a snowball at Faye. She tells him she has no time for such "frivolous activities".
  • Double Subverted: Until Charlie performs a Sneak Attack on them and they declare This Means War!
  • Parodied: The snowball fight is treated like an actual war, complete with Fictional Geneva Conventions, an Improvised Catapult, actual catapults, various Siege Engines to hurl snow at one other, a Sniper Duel or two, espionage, and every combat trope you can think of.
  • Zig Zagged: ???
  • Averted:
    • Alice and Bob do not throw snow at each other.
    • Alice and Bob live in a climate where there is no snow.
  • Enforced: The writers have fond memories of childhood snowball fights, and want to relive that through their work.
  • Lampshaded: "Hey, everybody! SNOWBALL FIIIIIIIIIIIGHT!!!"
  • Invoked: Bob, who loves snowball fights, throws snow at everyone he sees in the hopes of provoking one.
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: The Dean Bitterman forbids snowball fights.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Played For Drama: The Snowball Fight swiftly goes south once Bob nails Flash in the back of the head, covering his carefully groomed pompadour in snow. Cue Mass "Oh, Crap!" as Flash proceeds to furiously grab the hardest chunk of ice he can get his hands on and hurl it full force at Bob.
