Basic Trope: A character whose importance is downplayed in the trailer.

  • Straight: Sir Nautappear has an important role in Tropeland: The Movie; however, he only makes a small cameo in the trailers for the film.
  • Exaggerated:
    • Sir Nautappear is the main character and appears in every shot of the film, but is not even mentioned in the trailers.
    • The trailer doesn't show any characters at all.
  • Downplayed: Sir Nautappear is one of the supporting characters, and doesn't appear in the trailer.
  • Justified:
  • Inverted:
  • Subverted:
    • It looks as though Sir Nautappear is absent from the trailer, but it turns out he does appear, just in a way unrecognizable to the audience until they go see the movie (or TV show).
    • He's neglected by the first few trailers, but Sir Nautappear appears in much of a later trailer.
    • Sir Nautappear ends up not being as important as people thought, so the trailer was accurate.
  • Double Subverted: ...However, it is revealed that was just Sir Nautappear's Evil Twin, Sir Doesappear.
  • Parodied:
    • The whole trailer is filled with background characters who don't even have dialogue.
    • The more often a character appears in the trailer, the less of their importance to The Movie.
  • Zig-Zagged:
    • Sir Nautappear appears in the trailer, but that was just The Hero disguised as Sir Nautappear. But suddenly, Sir Nautappear does appear right next to The Hero... No, that's just The Lancer who's wearing Sir Nautappear's cloak. Yet you see Sir Nautappear blocking The Team's path... Oh wait, that's just Sir Doesappear...
    • Many trailers are made and aired for the film, which display characters of all levels of plot importance to varying degrees.
  • Averted: Every main character appears in the trailer, end of story.
  • Enforced:
    • The marketing team knows that other characters are more popular (or Sir Nautappear is unpopular), so they get lots of time in the trailer despite being less important than Sir Nautappear.
    • Sir Nautappear is being played by an up-and-coming actor who isn't yet as obviously marketable as the big names, so it's decided not to risk putting him up there alongside his more famous co-stars.
    • Sir Nautappear's role is to reveal a major plot twist, so he isn't included in the trailers to prevent Trailers Always Spoil.
    • Sir Nautappear's scenes hadn't been shot yet. Maybe he was added in response to backlash from this trailer.
  • Lampshaded: "Wait a second! Where's Sir Nautappear?" "He's not in this trailer." "Oh, right."
  • Implied: Alice mentions Sir Nautappear in several scenes included in the trailer, and viewers can guess that he might be the person in the background of another scene.
  • Invoked: Bob tells Sir Nautappear, who is offscreen, to stay offscreen.
  • Exploited: Sir Nautappear's role as the Dancing Bear requires cutting-edge makeup techniques, so he's withheld from the trailers to force the audience to pay to see him.
  • Defied: Sir Nautappear knows his role isn't big enough for him to appear in the trailers, so he tries to get more screen time in the film, so that he will appear in the trailers.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: "You'd think that Sir Nautappear would actually be in the trailer, given his role in the film!"
  • Played for Laughs: The other characters in the trailer make jokes about how they're not including everyone.
  • Played for Horror: Sir Nautappear's appearances are cut, and it ends up making the movie look a lot scarier.
