Go To

Basic Trope: Twins separated from each other at birth meet again years later.

  • Straight: Alice meets Kelly, a girl who looks very similar to her; upon investigating, they learn they're identical twins.
  • Exaggerated: Alice, Bethany, Claire, Kelly, Lauren and Moira all look similar and meet each other. They are a set of sextuplets who never met each other.
  • Downplayed:
    • Alice was aware she had a twin sister named Kelly, but had never met her beforehand.
    • Alice and Kelly are fraternal twins and don't look very alike.
  • Justified:
    • Kelly was kidnapped as a baby and the twins' parents couldn't bear to be reminded of her, so they never told Alice.
    • Kelly and Alice were adopted from birth, with two couples taking a baby each.
  • Inverted: Two unrelated children are brought home and raised together by the same couple; they then find out they're not related much later.
  • Subverted: Alice and Kelly look very alike, but a DNA test confirms they're not related, thus just making them Identical Strangers.
  • Double Subverted: Alice's parents tell her that she does have an identical twin sister out there, it's just not Kelly.
  • Parodied: Alice and Kelly are put up for adoption at birth, and they get adopted by two separate families living in the same town. As they're growing up, it seems like the whole universe is out to prevent them from meeting each other in more and more ridiculous ways.
  • Zig Zagged: ???
  • Averted: Kelly and Alice grew up together.
  • Enforced: Alice and Kelly's actors look really similar (whether they actually are siblings or Identical Strangers), so the creators make sure to include a plot where their characters find out they're related as well.
  • Lampshaded: ???
  • Invoked: Alice and Kelly's parents are scientists who are conducting a twin study, so they deliberately have Kelly raised by another couple to see how nature and nurture impact growth.
  • Exploited: Alice's family is wealthy, and her Identical Stranger Kelly pretends to be her long-lost twin sister to gain access to that wealth.
  • Defied:
    • Their parents refuse to split up the twins.
    • The adoption agency refuses to let anyone adopt Alice or Kelly unless they're willing to adopt both twins together.
    • Alice and Kelly get adopted by different families, but those parents are adamant about letting the twins meet up as often as possible.
  • Discussed: "You found your long-lost twin sister? It's just like a movie plot!"
  • Conversed: "Hey, another movie where the siblings are separated then they find each other again."
