Basic Trope: The primary character of a show is switched around frequently.

  • Straight : Episode 1 of Tropetown features Alice as the focus character, Episode 2 Bob, Episode 3 Claire, Episode 4 Danny, Episode 5 Evangeline, before starting over again with Alice.
  • Exaggerated: Episode 6 features Franklin, Episode 7 Gabe, Episode 8 Horrible Harry, Episode 9 Irene, Episode 10 Johnny, Episode 11 Krystle... Long story short no character ever has more than one episode.
  • Downplayed:
    • Plot Tailored to the Party: The plot moves to focus on each character individually, but more gradually.
    • Each season has a different POV character.
  • Justified:
    • We're not going to let the large cast go to waste, are we?
    • On the Edutainment Show Tropetown each episode is lead by the expert: Alice the botanist leads the botany episodes, Bob the entomologist leads the insect episodes, Charles the historian…
    • Every episode is from the Victim of the Week's POV.
  • Subverted: Episode 2 is about Bob, but every episode after returns to Alice.
  • Double Subverted: At the start of season Two, Tropetown goes to the format of having a different lead every episode.
  • Parodied: An Day In The Lime Light episode focuses on a recurring extra.
  • Zigzagged: Season One is a series of Day In The Lime Light episodes, but Season Two features only Alice as POV character and Protagonist, but Season Three goes back to the original format.
  • Averted: Alice is the only protagonist.
  • Enforced:

    • In order to make the central mystery challenging to solve, the producers decided to deliver the various clues through various POV characters, forcing the audience to decipher what is fact and what is character misinterpretation instead of just the clues themselves.
  • Lampshaded: "Now, who hasn't had an episode yet..."
  • Invoked: Alice asks Bob if he wants to be the protagonist for the next episode, which he accepts.
  • Defied: As soon as it looks like episode 2 is going to focus on Bob, Alice shows up, and insists that she is, and always will be, the protagonist of the show.
  • Exploited: Bob uses his focus episode to turn the world of Tropetown into a utopia. Although Claire reverts it back to normal by the next episode.
