Playing With / Nominal Importance

Go To

Basic Trope: A character is more important if given a name, such as being more likely to be spared.

  • Straight: Of all of the bad guy's mooks who get killed off, Jeffery is one of the few to not die due to having a name.
  • Exaggerated: Every single unnamed being in existence suddenly dies.
  • Downplayed: There are some of the named mooks that get killed off, but the vast majority of them are unnamed.
  • Justified: 'Keepsonticking' got his name for surviving these kinds of odds.
  • Inverted:
    • All of the named characters are insignificant and are the first to die.
    • The main character has No Name Given.
  • Subverted:
    • Jeffery is believed to be spared due to being one of the few mooks to have a name... but then he dies.
    • Jeffery's name isn't revealed until later on in the story.
  • Double Subverted: It was a Disney Death.
  • Parodied: An extra who says their name for the first time is immediately handed a suit of literal Plot Armor.
  • Zig-Zagged: ???
  • Averted: Whether or not a character has a name is unimportant to whether or not they're a significant impact.
  • Enforced:
    • "The other characters that just get killed off aren't so important, so let's not give them names."
    • To avoid Anyone Can Die.
  • Lampshaded: ???
  • Invoked: A character gives another character a name to humanize them and keep others (or the narrative) from killing them.
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: ???
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???

Back to Nominal Importance. The fact that we gave the trope a name means that it's important.
