Playing With / NPC Random Encounter Immunity

Go To

Basic Trope: NPCs can travel the video game world unmolested by the random encounter monsters and bandits that plague Hiro's party.

  • Straight: In Tales of Troperia XIV, NPCs wander the roads between towns but are never attacked by random encounter enemies.
  • Exaggerated: There are hundreds of NPCs along the roads and enemies explicitly go around them to only attack the party.
  • Downplayed: NPCs are not directly attacked by enemies, but can be damaged by enemy Splash Damage and Area of Effect attacks directed at the party.
  • Justified: The enemies are under the control of the Big Bad who explicitly paid said enemies to attack the party.
  • Inverted: Video game versions of Anyone Can Die and the like. Keeping them alive may in fact be part of the game.
  • Subverted: NPCs have this immunity...at first. Once the Big Bad gets desperate to stop the party, he orders his minions to begin attacking every traveler.
  • Double Subverted: Despite the Big Bad's order, NPCs can still be seen traveling unmolested.
  • Parodied:
  • Zig-Zagged: NPCs appear to travel the world unmolested, but when Hiro talks to them, they talk about having to fight off the monsters as the travel as well as people they know who have been lost.
  • Averted: All NPCs can be attacked in their travels. You can see them fighting, and they can win or lose depending on their strength and that of the enemy, just like the party.
  • Enforced: The game producer considers this an important Acceptable Break from Reality and requires that it be included.
  • Lampshaded: Quirby points out in a conversation with Hiro about how "it seems like the monsters only attack us, never the random nameless folks along the roads".
  • Exploited:
  • Defied:
  • Discussed:
  • Conversed:
  • Deconstructed: This appears to be the case early in the game, as the Big Bad only wants to attack the party. However, after he gets desperate, he orders his minions to attack every traveler along the roads. From that point on, whenever the party is traveling, they bear witness to untold slaughter of NPCs.
  • Reconstructed: ...but the party learns an important lesson about their impact on the world. By making the right moral choices throughout the game, the destruction is minimized and they protect many of the NPCs.
