Go To

Basic Trope: Someone acts foolishly when they're in love with another person.

  • Straight: Bob is normally smart, but acts foolishly when around Alice.
  • Exaggerated: Bob is so much in love with Alice that he is completely unable to function in society if he ever as much thinks about her.
  • Downplayed: When speaking to Alice, Bob tends to say things that are odd, but quickly covers them up so that she (or anyone else) doesn't notice.
  • Justified: Bob has never been in love before so he doesn't know how to handle his growing feelings for Alice.
  • Inverted:
    • Bob is in love with Alice, but it's her who acts dumb when she's around him.
    • Bob is a Dumbass No More and it's thanks to his relationship with Alice.
  • Subverted: Bob has always been an idiot. It's just more noticeable when he's around Alice.
  • Double Subverted: But that is because he is an even bigger idiot when around her!
  • Parodied: Whenever he sees Alice, Bob can't even remember his name.
  • Zig Zagged: Ever since he started being around Alice, while he has made some dumb decisions, he's also made some good ones as well.
  • Averted:
    • Bob decided that he need to think rationally when it comes to Alice.
    • Despite his growing feelings for Alice, Bob still manages to maintain a good head on his shoulders, deciding that it was no excuse to act like a fool.
  • Enforced: Alice is an opportunistic gold digger who regularly manipulates Bob to keep him none the wiser.
  • Lampshaded: "Every time Alice even as much as winks at you, it's like you forget you have a brain!"
  • Invoked: Bob's friends sigh as they see him fall in love with Alice, noting that he always makes a fool of himself around women.
  • Exploited: Charlie, Bob's rival, decides to invite Alice to watch a tournament where both are competing against each other in the hopes that it will knock him off his game.
  • Implied: Bob's friends bring up all the dumb things he did with his previous girlfriend when he tells them about Alice.
  • Defied: "I may be a fool for love, Darling. But I'm no dope."
  • Discussed: Bob's friends talked about how much he keeps bumbling over himself just to impress Alice.
  • Conversed: "Ever since he's started dating Alice, have you noticed how idiotic Bob has been lately? She has him wrapped around her finger!"
  • Deconstructed: Bob starts to review his dumb behavior towards Alice and wonder if this relationship, or any for that matter was healthy and worth pursuing.
  • Reconstructed: He eventually concludes that despite his flaws, Alice loves him for who he is and if he gets himself into trouble, she'll be there to help him.
  • Played for Laughs: Bob is distracted from Alice smiling at him that he unknowingly walks right into the door.
  • Played for Drama: Bob's grades have been slipping due to focusing everything on Alice and if he doesn't improve soon, he may fail his classes, lose his scholarship, and not be able to graduate.
