Playing With / Light Is Good

Go To

Basic Trope: A good person who is characterized by light.

  • Straight: Hikari is a miko or something similar who is dressed in white and also serves as the healer by using White Magic, Holy Hand Grenade, etc.
  • Exaggerated: Hikari is so Pure and Good that all Darkness dissipates near-instantaneously in her path. She's also one of the kindest people you'll ever meet.
  • Downplayed: She has a few light-themed abilities, and while not perfect, is willing to be as good and nice as she can be.
  • Justified: Light is pure and honest and is a bringer of life, and anyone associated with light also carries those qualities.
  • Inverted:
  • Subverted:
    • Hikari turns out to be a Bitch in Sheep's Clothing / villain who uses light as a disguise.
    • Hikari is introduced dressed in a flowing white gown, carrying a golden staff, and seeming to radiate White Magic ... and then she uses extremely dark magic to drive the villains away from her monastery.
  • Double Subverted:
    • That was her evil twin sister.
    • She was The Mole.
    • Hikari is a strong example of Good Is Not Nice; her aloof and irritable nature makes it easy for manipulative enemies to falsely paint her as actually evil.
  • Parodied: We hear an Ethereal Choir when we hear her name.
  • Zig-Zagged:
    • Hikari goes through a Heel–Face Revolving Door throughout the story.
    • Hikari bounces between dressing like a saint and dressing like a goth at the drop of a hat.
  • Averted:
    • Hikari is associated with light and stars, etc., but is not particularly good or bad.
    • No one is associated with light.
  • Enforced: "As per the producer's orders, we need a heroine who would make the perfect couple with the dark but equally heroic Kim Min Su."
  • Lampshaded: "Of course we can trust her. She uses Light magic, after all!"
  • Invoked: Hikari, to be non-threatening and show the world her goodness, wears white.
  • Exploited: Alice and Bob want to improve their morality, so they keep to the light.
  • Defied:
    • Hikari wears white and uses holy-themed powers, but she's an unrepentant Blood Knight and Token Evil Teammate.
Hikari: Screw your silly stereotypes! I'll use my powers any way I want!
    • Hikari is good herself, but when this trope gets brought up, she shoots it down and warns her allies that cruelty can hide in light as well as darkness.
  • Discussed: "Your kindness is like a bright light in my life."
  • Conversed: "A beam of sunshine on a dark and cloudy day illuminates the pure-hearted maiden. Subtle, isn't it?"
  • Implied: The Big Good is The Ghost, but they are said to wear an entirely white costume.
  • Deconstructed: While The Hero is good, his glowing white angelic wings are a Portent of Doom, mainly because white wings represent misfortune and death. This turns his already difficult mission into an extremely painful ordeal, as he has to clash against the people he's meant to save.
  • Played for Drama: The Minister grants the Paladins the power of the light ... However, said light turns out to be the trapped souls of good people unwillingly "harvested" to generate said kind of power. Not surprisingly, Paladins who find out the truth don't take it well ... At all.

Back to noble and kind Light Is Good.
