Basic Trope: A character willingly helps someone who's conquered his people.
- Straight: Bob betrays People's Republic of Good Kingdom to The Empire for profit.
- Exaggerated:
- Bob betrays and trolls the The Good Kingdom, despite being fully aware of the Empire's policy of executing traitors.
- Bob sells humanity out to an Eldritch Abomination to avoid getting eaten himself.
- Bob does it because he wants to become an Asshole Victim eaten by the Eldritch Abomination first, so he won't have to live to see what happens to the world and humanity once the creature invades.
- Downplayed:
- Troll Bob betrays La Résistance... by dating Lady Darkness.
- Bob doesn't like The Empire, but figures that since they are in charge, he should do what they say, and tries to convince them to treat his people better. He ends up being considered a Troll by many.
- Justified:
- Bob is a plain old Dirty Coward.
- Bob honestly believes things would be better if The Empire was in charge, so he pulled a Face–Heel Turn for amusement.
- Bob is Only in It for the Money, and now that The Empire is the main authority, currying favor with them is the best way to get some good business deals.
- The Empire is forcing Bob to turn traitor, perhaps by holding Bob's Love Interest prisoner or threatening to raze his hometown if he doesn't cooperate.
- Inverted: Everyone but Bob welcomes Emperor Evulz.
- Subverted:
- Bob is just getting close to Emperor Evulz to kill him...
- Or, Bob actually infiltrated The Empire, posing as a willing collaborator, to become an Internal Reformist.
- Bob was always a supporter of Emperor Evulz, and didn't want money.
- Double Subverted:
- ...but Bob takes Emperor Evulz' place.
- ... which is the story Bob sold to the Resistance; he really did Become The Mask.
- Parodied: As soon as The Empire's troops start rolling in, Bob runs up to his closet and picks out his "Empire Citizen" outfit (next to several other outfits, presumably to be worn for other potential occupiers).
- Zig Zagged: Bob suffers from Chronic Backstabbing Disorder; his true loyalties are impossible to discern.
- Averted: Bob is completely loyal to La Résistance, despite their faults.
- Enforced: Bob is an Alicetonian, and the creators hate Alicetonians.
- Lampshaded: "So, Bob's been helping the bad guys all along!"
- Invoked: Emperor Evulz' main advisor, General Drake, points out that La Résistance has treated Bob terribly, so Bob shouldn't be loyal to them...
- Exploited:
- Alice, knowing that Bob is often nowhere to be seen, but is inherently curious about their plans, even when they don't involve him or anyone he knows, and seems to have come into possession of thirty pieces of silver, figures he's The Mole!
- Alice feeds him false information in order to mislead Emperor Evulz.
- Defied: (continued from "Invoked") ...but despite this, Bob is loyal to La Résistance.
- Discussed: ???
- Conversed: "In these shows, there's always somebody helping the bad guys."
- Deconstructed:
- Bob even says "Emperor Evulz has made me rich!"
- Bob is hated by La Résistance for his treachery, and after Evulz' occupation is ended his treatment only gets worse.
- Reconstructed: Emperor Evulz isn't so bad after all, and only Bob can see it.
- Played For Laughs: Bob betrays everybody at some point in the story.
- Played For Drama:
- Bob angsts about how he has no friends because he betrays them all.
- Bob and his Ragtag Band of Misfits are far more brutal than Evulz professional soldiers given their personal grudges with the Kingdom's people.
- Untwisted: Bob is enslaved to Emperor Evulz by means of an enchantment, but once it's removed, he still works for Emperor Evulz.
- Implied: The hero pretends to be a collaborator, implying there are real collaborators to hide among.
