Basic Trope: A character who is the last member of a group, civilization, or even species.
- Straight: Gy'nary is the last member of the Atarian race, and the only one who escaped his Home-Planet-Shattering-Kaboom.
- Exaggerated:
- Gy'nary is the only living creature in his universe.
- Something wiped out all of time, forward and backwards, and Gy'nary is the sole survivor. He is the only living thing in any universe ever.
- Downplayed:
- In an in-universe example of Technology Marches On, most of the freighter pilots are now robots; Gy'nary is the last organic pilot.
- Racial Remnant.
- Justified:
- If Gy'nary gets around to explaining how exactly he became the Last of His Kind, he will justify it with said explanation.
- Gn'nary's home planet of Gy'nish was hit by an asteroid the size of the moon. Gy'nary was in a spaceship in orbit when it happened.
- Gy'nary's species was hunted to extinction either due to the demand for their pelts or because they were seen as pests.
- Gy'nary's species never had a large population to begin with. They were endemic to a tiny island the size of Manhattan which was off the coast of Antarctica.
- Gy'nary killed the other Atarians.
- Inverted: Gy'nary is an artificial organism; he happens to be the first of his kind, which is temporarily a Single Specimen Species until his female counterpart is born.
- Subverted: Gy'nary thinks he's the Last of His Kind, but it turns out that There Is Another.
- Double-Subverted: …but in short order, said Other is Killed Off For Real.
- Parodied:
- Bob makes a big deal out of the fact that he's the only person left on the planet with brown eyes.
- Gy'nary casually mentions his race being destroyed, but doesn't seem to be upset about being the last living member of it.
- There are dozens of surviving Atarians, but Gy'nary is the only one who can roll his tongue.
- Zig-zagged: Gy'nary is constantly cloned, and his clone is repeatedly killed off.
- Averted: Either others of Gy'nary's species are seen, or it is mentioned that there are others early on.

- This trope can be a viable method of generating sympathy for a character…
- …or, on the villainous side, an excuse for his evil deeds.
- Lampshaded: “Don't you dare feel sorry for me just because I'm the last of my kind.”
- Invoked:
- Evil Emperor Evulz massacres Gy'nary's entire race in an effort to recruit him as The Dragon; Gy'nary is either unaware of that plot, or has no choice but to accept.
- Evulz drops trillions of trillions of nukes on Gy'nary's home planet of Gy'nish to make sure his species is annihilated.
- "Alright folks, the Gy'nishian Hunt officially starts now. Remember, every severed head you bring in will be reimbursed for two hundred dollars as well as a raffle ticket for a chance to win the new car."
- Exploited:
- Gy'nary uses his last of kind status as a Tear Jerker exploit to make people pity him.
- Gy'nary is worth millions of dollars, and is eventually sold as a pet to some trillionare.
- Emperor Evulz takes advantage of the emotional trauma of being the last known Atarian to tempt Gy'nary into joining him.
- "Step right up, step right up! Welcome to P. T. Barnum's museum of curiosities. Now I will show you our star exhibit; Gy'nary, the last of his kind!"
- Defied:
- During his escape from the Earth-Shattering Kaboom, Gy'nary put his sister (or another fertile female of his race that he knew) in suspended animation so that there will be a chance of his race repopulating elsewhere.
- Emperor Evulz makes sure there are no survivors when he exterminates Gy'nary's race.
- Scientists clone Gy'nary multiple times to bring his species back from the brink.
- Discussed:Bar Patron: That man over there is the last of his kind, dude. He's shut himself off and rather'd die alone.
- Conversed: “So Gy'nary's the Last Of His Kind? That's awful!”
- Implied: Every other race has multiple members appear on screen; Gy'nary is the only example of his race ever shown. When another character casually asks when they'll get to visit his homeworld, Gy'nary goes into a momentary Heroic BSoD. He's also got an implacable hatred of a recurring villain who wears what looks like an Atarian pelt as a trophy.
- Deconstructed: Gy'nary's excessive hunting and poaching has led to him aiming at the last Brown-Spotted Tropenent. He then realizes that he has very nearly committed Genocide.
- Reconstructed:
- The Brown-Spotted Tropenent becomes Gy'nary's sidekick and Team Pet to his fellow former hunters.
- The hunters form a charity called Save The Brown- Spotted Tropenents, which aims at keeping the last one alive and cloning a mate to fertilize the eggs it lays.
- Played For Drama: Gy'nary is the antagonist of the story, seeking revenge for the destruction of his species or attempting to revive them at the expense of the rest of the world. The heroes' victory is treated as bittersweet; for better or worse, the world will never be the same without him.
