Basic Trope: Someone talks about another character as though they aren't even there, usually in a way that is insulting.

  • Straight: Alice starts telling her husband Bob about something bad their son Charlie did, while Charlie is standing there. Charlie asks, "You do realize I'm here, right?"
  • Exaggerated: Alice starts going on a tangent and practically giving Charlie an indirect "The Reason You Suck" Speech, not caring at all that he's standing right there.
  • Downplayed: Alice criticizes Charlie a little harsher than she probably should. Charlie isn't in the room, but can still hear her and is offended.
  • Justified:
    • Alice genuinely didn't know Charlie was there.
    • Charlie has a disability of some sort, and Alice thinks that means he doesn't understand when they're talking about him.
    • Alice did know Charlie was there, and she's intentionally trying to tell him something indirectly.
    • Alice is a Jerkass who wants Charlie to hear her because she knows her words will upset him.
  • Inverted: Charlie isn't there, but Alice is speaking to him as though he were standing right there.
  • Subverted: Alice reveals that she wasn't actually talking about her son Charlie, but her annoying coworker who also happens to be named Charlie.
  • Double Subverted: But Alice doesn't even have a coworker named Charlie.
  • Parodied: ???
  • Zig-Zagged: …at least, not anymore.
  • Averted: Nobody insults someone as though they're not there.
  • Enforced: "We want to show this character is tactless and mean, and what better way to do that than to have them openly insult someone while the person is around to hear them?"
  • Lampshaded: "Mom, you know I can hear you, right?"
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied:
    • Alice waits until Charlie isn't there in order to tell Bob about something bad Charlie did.
    • Charlie announces his presence before Alice can even get started.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Deconstructed: Charlie feels as though his mom talking about him like he isn't there is insulting.

Yeah, keep leaking my past of edit wars, nattering, and word cruft. It's not like I'm Standing Right Here, you asshole.
