Playing With / I Call It "Vera"

Go To

Basic: A character gives their weapon a human name.

  • Straight: Alice names her sword, which she has a sentimental attachment to, "Bob".
  • Exaggerated:
    • Alice names her sword "Robert Edward Richard James Alexander Smith Esq".
    • Alice has a collection of swords, all with names and family history.
    • Everyone gives their sword a human name.
    • Alice anthropomorphizes her sword to an extreme, giving it a fictional backstory, family and pretending like it talks back to her.
  • Downplayed:
    • Alice occasionally calls her sword Bob as a joke.
    • Alice calls her sword "Blade".
    • Alice owns a baseball bat signed by Bob Feller. She occasionally calls the bat "Bob" in Feller's honor.
  • Justified: Alice's sword talks and has a personality, and is like a human in all ways except his body, so he needed a human name.
  • Inverted: They Call Him "Sword"
  • Subverted: Looks like Alice named her sword Bob to be sentimental, but it's actually the other kind of bob and named for its hair-cutting powers.
  • Double Subverted: ...and her nickname for it is Claire.
  • Parodied: Alice insists that everyone treat "Bob" like a real, human member of their team, up to giving it some of her food during meals.
  • Deconstructed: Alice has a mental illness and genuinely thinks her sword is her lost love, Bob.
  • Reconstructed: Alice is perfectly aware the sword is just an object and calls it Bob because she can.
  • Averted: Alice's sword does not have a name.
  • Enforced: The producer notices that in other movies of the same genre that made money in the box office, the heroes always have a close bond with and a name for their weapons. They order the writers to name Alice's sword.
  • Implied: Desmond tells his friend, "Are you crazy? I'm nothing like Alice- my sword doesn't even have a name!"
  • Lampshaded: "The sword's real name is Heartcutter, but Alice just calls it Bob."
  • Invoked: Desmond suggests that Alice name her sword Bob so she gains a sentimental attachment to it and he can use it as a bargaining chip.
  • Exploited: Desmond, noticing that Alice named her sword, assumes she has a sentimental attachment to it and uses it as a bargaining chip.
  • Defied: Ellie does not allow Alice to name her sword so Desmond cannot use it as a bargaining chip.
  • Discussed: "Alice reminds me of one of those heroes whose only friend is the sword that they named.
  • Played for Drama: The sword belonged to her deceased lover, Bob, and it is her Tragic Keepsake. She still calls it Bob and talks to it like she would talk to her lover (except she doesn't actually think it's Bob, she's just lonely)
