Basic Trope: Fashionable gloves are a sign of good class and breeding.

  • Straight: Alice owns several pairs of gloves to wear when going out.
  • Exaggerated: Alice buys gloves the way other ladies buy shoes.
  • Downplayed: Alice just owns a couple pairs of gloves, and saves them for black tie events.
  • Justified:
    • Alice is a spy, and knows that dressing the part is important.
    • Alice lives in a time period where fancy people wearing gloves was a social norm.
  • Inverted:
    • Alice wears gloves casually, and has bare hands for formal events.
    • Alice wears thick gloves for protection while doing manual labor.
  • Subverted: Alice looks like she's wearing gloves while she's gracefully holding her hands in a white fur muff, but when she removes one of her hands, it's bare.
  • Double Subverted: It turns out the glove slipped off, so Alice puts it back on.
  • Parodied:
    • Bob is a boxer, but wears different types of gloves for different matches, to show he is a gentleman.
    • Alice wears gloves while typing on her keyboard to edit on TV Tropes.
  • Zig Zagged: ???
  • Averted: Alice almost never wears gloves.
  • Enforced: Good, old Product Placement.
  • Lampshaded: ???
  • Invoked: Gloves at parties are part of the country club's Dress Code.
  • Exploited: Alice is a thief, and not only will the gloves not leave fingerprints, they can't even trace any fabric left behind, because all the ladies at the gala were required to wear white satin gloves.
  • Defied: ???
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Deconstructed: As with all items of fashion, there are questions of color, material and brand that can help or hinder Alice's desire to be seen as high-class by wearing opera gloves. Then, of course, gloves can be wrinkled or stained or fall loose.
  • Reconstructed: Understanding all the fashion rules and moving gracefully while wearing the gloves cements Alice's status as a true fashionista.
  • Played For Laughs: Alice is wearing tight leather opera gloves, so tight in fact that she sacrifices some dexterity, getting wine all over her matching leather dress over and over again.
  • Played For Horror: Alice never wears gloves. This is a sign she's been taken over by the hive mind.
  • Played for Drama: To be properly elegant at parties, Alice has to wear tight-fitting gloves, but these make her clumsy and she's in tears to the point of being reduced to Inelegant Blubbering over her ruined dress. She practices holding objects with her gloves on and doesn't ruin any more dresses.
