Basic Trope: A character isn't wearing underwear.

  • Straight:
    • Alice does not wear panties.
    • Bob is not wearing underpants.
  • Exaggerated:
    • Alice has no idea what underwear is.
    • Every single character clearly never wears underwear.
    • Alice goes naked from the waist down.
    • Alice wears a microskirt that only covers up to her upper thigh.
  • Downplayed: Alice doesn't wear panties with her Spy Catsuit, to avoid pantylines.
  • Justified:
    • The local climate is much warmer than Alice is used to, and going without panties helps her deal with the heat.
    • Alice got interrupted or distracted while she was getting dressed.
    • Underwear is not worn in Alice's culture.
    • Alice's panties recently got destroyed, stolen, soaked, juiced or simply lost, and she hasn't had a chance to replace them yet.
    • Alice just forgot to put on panties today.
    • Alice forgot to do the laundry and as a result, had no clean panties to wear at all.
    • Alice lets it be known that she does not wear panties so that boys will stop lifting her skirt to look at them.
    • Alice simply just feels more comfortable without panties.
    • Alice has autism, and her sensory issues make panties uncomfortable.
  • Inverted:
    • Alice is naked except for her panties.
    • Alice's costume involves wearing her panties over her pants
    • Alice has another pair of panties on under her panties. And possibly more panties under those.
  • Subverted:
  • Double Subverted: ...but today she forgot to put them on.
  • Parodied:
    • Alice is a cheerleader who's carelessly misplaced her panties right before the Big Game. When she confesses her mistake, her teammates reassure her that nobody will notice, and to prove how confident they are they all remove their own panties too and the whole squad goes out on the field to perform their routine commando.
    • A gust of wind blows Alice's skirt and shirt off, leaving her nude in public.
  • Zig Zagged: Alice is a famous up-and-coming Idol Singer, and while changing into her costume for her sold-out, televised concert she gets a nasty shock: her sneaky and nasty rival Beth has stolen the frilly white panties that go with the costume and left a taunting note daring Alice to either cancel the concert and ruin her career, or try to sing and dance in a tiny minidress with no panties and end up flashing the audience, humiliating herself and ruining her reputation *and* her career. While struggling to decide if a slim chance of saving her career is worth risking her modesty, she suddenly realizes she can just borrow some underwear for the show and hurries to ask her backup dancer Charlotte for help. The panties Charlotte offers her are much skimpier than what Alice is used to wearing on stage, but far better than no panties at all, so Alice gratefully slips them on. Then, just as the show is about to start, she thinks of something unsettling and pulls Charlotte aside to make sure the other girl has a spare pair to wear herself. Charlotte laughs off her concerns and reassures Alice that the panties aren't even hers: she got them from her fellow backup dancer, Denise. The performance starts, and Alice quickly becomes even more worried that the quiet and modest Denise has been deprived of her underwear, a suspicion that grows increasingly certain as she steals glances at the other dancers and notices that Denise looks really uncomfortable and seems to be working very hard to make sure her costume miniskirt stays in place while she dances. Thanks to these efforts, Denise manages to maintain her modesty until the big finale, but Alice knows that the riskiest choreography is yet to come: the big climax, which calls for all the backup dancers to line up at the front of the stage for a series of twirls and high kicks that are almost guaranteed to expose poor Denise's missing underwear. Thinking quickly, Alice realizes that all she has to do to protect Denise is shield her from sight, and carefully positions herself directly between the underdressed dancer and the TV cameras. It works perfectly, and the live broadcast is mercifully free of any unplanned exposure. But meanwhile, Beth spread the rumor through the audience that Alice forgot her underwear tonight, and countless cameras have been pointed right at her crotch the whole show, hoping to get a glimpse of evidence to support the story. So by dancing right in front of Denise, Alice was really putting both of them in the audience's focus, so to speak, and Denise ends up flashing everyone after all. But because Denise's face was safely out of view, nobody watchi can tell *which* backup dancer they're watching, and poor Denise is spared any ridicule or public infamy as a result. In the end, the story of Alice's unidentified pantyless backup dancer drives her popularity higher than ever.
  • Averted: Alice wears panties.
  • Enforced:
    • Alice is the show's resident Ms. Fanservice, but her frequent and gratuitous panty shots are starting to become so predictable that the audience loses interest. To keep things fresh, she gets A Day in the Limelight in which she carelessly misplaces her panties and spends the whole episode trying to make sure that nobody finds out.
    • "Nothing will turn the fans on more than revealing that the main character doesn't wear underwear!"
  • Lampshaded: Upon witnessing a gust of wind lift Alice's miniskirt to reveal her lack of underwear, Bob exclaims, "Wow! And I thought girls only dressed like that in cheap movies!"
  • Invoked:
  • Exploited:
    • Shortly before Alice and Bob's big showdown against their Evil Counterparts Candice and Don, the villains discover that Alice never wears underwear, and to rig the match in their favor they make sure that Bob finds out about it too, in the hopes that he'll be too distracted to concentrate on fighting.
    • Having discovered that Alice isn't wearing panties under her miniskirt, a Villain of the Week escapes by climbing a fire escape ladder on a busy street, leaving Alice unable to follow without revealing her secret to everyone below.
    • The Villain of the Week snags Alice's skirt and pushes her so she is swiftly stripped naked as she falls.
    • Alice goes out on a windy day while wearing a skirt and no undergarments beneath to act as a distraction while her accomplices orchestrate a sinister scheme.
  • Defied:
    • After relating how she recently fell victim to a Panty Thief, Alice quickly adds, "Of course, I found another pair as soon as I could. I'm not the kind of woman that would just go around without any..."
    • Alice always carries around spare underwear, just in case.
  • Discussed: Alice attends a formal event in a very sheer gown, setting off a flurry of speculation as to whether or not she's wearing underwear.
  • Conversed: Bob, reading a tabloid article about a famous socialite with a suspiciously familiar name was recently photographed getting out of a car with no panties on, wonders why none of the girls he knows ever forget to wear panties. Alice points out that maybe they would if their time slot was after Watershed, and the odds would be even better on cable.
  • Implied:
    • Alice crosses her legs while sitting on a park bench and talking to Bob. He suddenly falls silent for a second and looks down with a big goofy grin, then continues talking.
    • After getting out of the shower, Alice is seen frantically searching for a pair of panties in a mountain of clothes. She takes a look at her watch, realizes that she's very late already and storms off. The next scene shows her fully dressed while sitting in the subway, but she keeps the skirt between her legs down and looks around nervously.
    • A Panty Thief blushes and stops mid-sentence when trying to explain why he failed to steal underwear from Alice.
  • Deconstructed: Alice causes a tremendous scandal when a gust of wind in the middle of her big speech at the PTA meeting reveals that she isn't wearing any panties under her school uniform.
  • Reconstructed: Facing disciplinary measures after the incident, Alice defiantly declares that she's done nothing wrong, since she's checked the official dress code and it makes no mention of underwear whatsoever. All the other girls quickly rally to support her by going without their underwear as well.
  • Played For Laughs: Bob can't stop thinking about how Alice isn't wearing any panties, so he keeps accidentally mentioning it and making himself look like a pervert.
  • Played For Drama: Alice is walking home without panties... because someone tore them off and raped her.
