You've been sent to your room! Great, now you can play!

Basic Trope: Parents send a child to their room when they misbehave.
  • Straight: Alice and Bob's daughter Carlie throws a fit about eating vegetables, so they send her to her room.
  • Exaggerated: Alice and Bob don't let Carlie leave her room for a week, sliding food through the slot in the door.
  • Downplayed: Alice and Bob send Carlie to her room for 60 seconds so she can dry her tears and control her anger.
  • Justified: Alice and Bob know that Carlie can get destructive when she gets mad, so they send her to her room where the only things she can destroy are her things.
  • Inverted:
    • Alice and Bob punish Carlie by not letting her go to her room.
    • Carlie is supposed to be doing something else and goes to her room instead out of spite.
  • Subverted: Alice and Bob punish Carlie by telling her to go to her rabbit, and clean up its poo.
  • Double Subverted: After she's cleaned up the rabbit poo, they tell her to go to her room.
  • Parodied: Alice and Bob send Carlie to crazy places, like Antarctica, the toilet museum, and the Mariana Trench as a punishment.
  • Zig Zagged: Alice and Bob send Carlie to her room...then have a talk and decide that that's a bad punishment. They call her out, then she has another tantrum and they send her to her room again. Then, they realize they sent her identical twin Darla instead of Carlie, and Carlie throws another tantrum. They send her to her room and tell Darla she can come out, but now Darla is angry and she throws a fit, which gets her sent straight back to the room with Carlie.
  • Averted:
    • Carlie does not misbehave.
    • Alice and Bob have a different punishment for Carlie.
  • Lampshaded: "Carlie's misbehaving, we'll send her to her room."
  • Implied: Carlie throws a fit, we cut away to another POV character, and then when we cut back to Carlie she's in her room crying.
  • Deconstructed: Alice and Bob send Carlie to her room. Carlie takes full advantage of the games and toys in there, gets mad at her parents, and doesn't learn a thing about why throwing fits and refusing to eat veggies is wrong.
  • Reconstructed: Alice and Bob take all the games and toys out of Carlie's room before they send her there, and after she takes a five-minute time-out, they talk to her about why she was punished.
  • Played for Laughs: The parents send Carlie to her room as a punishment and Carlie sings a whole happy song about it.
  • Played for Drama: It's a vital moment in Carlie's conflict that her parents don't understand her and never listen to her.
  • Played for Horror: While Carlie is angry, sad and at a low point in her room, the devil visits her.

I am very angry with you! Go to Your Room!
