Basic Trope: While women appreciate the scenery, men appreciate a...different kind of view.

  • Straight: Alice and Bob go on vacation together. Alice remarks on the beauty of the sunset from the large window in their beachfront hotel. Bob remarks, "It sure is," only it turns out that instead of looking at the sunset, he is admiring Alice who looks lovely in this light.
  • Exaggerated: Bob isn't simply looking at Alice, he is drooling over her. They aren't even a romantic couple.
  • Downplayed: Both Alice and Bob admire the sunset, but Bob sneaks peeks at Alice too.
  • Justified: Lying back and admiring the view is Alice's way of enticing Bob.
  • Inverted: While looking out at the sunset, Bob remarks on Alice's beauty. Alice concurs with him, but it turns out she was talking about the sunset, not herself.
  • Gender Inverted: Bob remarks on the beauty of the sunset from the large window in their beachfront hotel. Alice remarks, "It sure is," only it turns out that instead of looking at the sunset, she's looking at Bob.
  • Subverted: Bob is looking in Alice's direction, but he's looking past her at some other natural feature.
  • Double Subverted: Eventually, he gets bored looking at it and looks at her instead.
  • Parodied:
    • Bob's protestations that he is looking at the sunset instead of Alice fall under Blatant Lies.
    • Alice catches Bob out for looking at her instead of the sunset, but when he challenges her to describe it, she can't because she was looking at him.
  • Zig-Zagged: Alice and Bob alternate between looking at the scenery and at each other.
  • Averted: Alice and Bob are both looking at the scenery, or at each other, at the same time.
  • Enforced:
    • Fanservice for viewers who are attracted both to Alice and to nature.
    • In the original script, both Bob and Alice were supposed to be looking at the sunset, but Ben couldn't keep his eyes off Amy, so they changed that.
  • Lampshaded: "Bob, why are you looking at me instead of the sunset? I know I've got a luscious body and I'm totally, comfortably, naked within reach of you...and I just answered my own question."
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: Emperor Evulz does something to Alice and/or Bob because they were distracted.
  • Defied: Alice goes into the hotel room, locks Bob out on the balcony, and pulls the blinds so he can't look at her instead of the sunset.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: "Look, she's looking at the sunset, but he's looking at her. Smells like Ship Tease."
  • Implied: All that we see of Alice or Bob are the angles of their heads, but Bob's head is clearly pointed more towards the balcony itself than what lies beyond it, while the opposite is the case for Alice.
  • Deconstructed:
    • Bob is in love with Alice but Cannot Spit It Out, so he's only left to look at her beauty.
    • This is the last time Alice and Bob will be able to spend time together, so they try to make the most of it.
  • Played for Laughs: Bob looks at Alice, catches a glimpse of her tattoo, and bursts out laughing because the picture is hilarious to him.
  • Played for Drama: Alice and Bob are unable to make eye contact for whatever reason, so Bob can only look at her; Alice can never look back.
