Playing With / Fictional Age of Majority

Go To

Basic Trope: The age of majority is not 18 but something else in a magical world.

  • Straight: In Troperia, fairies come of age at 15.
  • Exaggerated: Fairies come of age at seven.
  • Downplayed: Fairies come of age at seventeen because that is their last year of school.
  • Justified:
    • Fairies physically mature faster than humans.
    • Fairies live After the End where they must grow up fast.
    • In the world they live in, fairiess are constantly in danger of being killed, so they mature faster.
  • Subverted: It turns out that 15-year-old getting married had been emancipated.
  • Double Subverted: But the age of majority is 17.
  • Averted: The age of majority is 18.
  • Invoked: Princess Mary changes the law so that fairies become adults at 15.
  • Exploited: In the war, young teenage fairies have to fight due to being over the age of majority.
  • Defied: Princess Mary makes the age of majority 18.
  • Deconstructed: 15-year-old brains and bodies are still developing(at least in humans), so they are not prepared for drugs, alcohol, war, marriage, or pregnancy.
  • Reconstructed: Fairies have Bizarre Alien Biology so their bodies and brains are fully developed at 15.
  • Played For Drama: Alice is 15 when she begins smoking marijuana and getting super drunk. She marries Bob and has a daughter, Charlotte. She ends up divorcing Bob as she was unaware of his cheating with Diane and abandons her daughter. She ends up called for war and riddled with drug and alcohol problems, commits suicide.
