Playing With / Fat and Skinny

Go To

Basic Trope: A pairing consists of a fat character and a skinny character.

  • Straight: The overweight Bob is often seen hanging out with the thin Charlie.
  • Exaggerated:
  • Downplayed: Bob simply has a gut, while Charlie only looks skinny when compared to Bob.
  • Justified: Bob and Charlie are simply good friends who happen to have different body types but similar interests.
  • Inverted: Bob and Charlie are a fat guy and a skinny guy who hate each other's guts and go to great lengths to avoid one another.
  • Subverted:
  • Double Subverted:
    • Charlie puts on weight to compensate for Bob becoming thin.
    • Bob loses weight to compensate for Charlie becoming obese.
  • Parodied: Bob is literally a planet and Charlie is a moving skeleton.
  • Zig Zagged: Bob and Charlie alternate between losing and gaining weight. Sometimes, both of them are thin or both of them are fat.
  • Averted:
    • Fat characters are never seen socializing with skinny characters and vice versa.
    • Bob and Charlie are part of a larger friend group with people of varying weight, but are The Friends Who Never Hang compared to the other characters.
  • Enforced:
    • "We need these two characters to be easier to distinguish, so how about we make it so one of their girth's the inverse of the other guy?"
    • "Laurel and Hardy's 95th anniversary is coming in a few weeks, we have to cash in on it."
  • Lampshaded: "Ever notice how fat guys and skinny guys often hang out together?"
  • Invoked: Alice arranges for Bob and Charlie to befriend each other.
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: Bob and Charlie refuse to associate with each other.
  • Discussed: "We may be different girths, but that is just one of the many contrasts that make our interactions very interesting."
  • Conversed: "It puzzles me to see an overweight man spending lots of time with a skinny man. Is the show supposed to give a not-so-subtle commentary on how people can get along in spite of how different they are?"
  • Implied: Bob and Charlie both wear armor to make them look muscular, but Bob's armor is clearly straining and Charlie's appears to rattle. Bob also sounds hefty and struggling to breathe, while Charlie sounds wheezing and sickly.
  • Untwisted: Bob and Charlie (who are unseen for most of the story) are repeatedly stated to weigh the same, except when they are finally introduced, Bob is short and stout (being 5'7" and 175 pounds) while Charlie is tall and lanky (being 6'7" and 175 pounds).
