Basic Trope: A player-character that can only acquire some weapons or items by looting enemies.

  • Straight: Bob can only acquire a flamethrower by killing an Elite Mook and then looting him.
  • Exaggerated: The player's only means of acquiring weapons and items are from looting enemies - there are no stores and no currency.
  • Downplayed: A flamethrower can be purchased, but it's easier to simply loot an Elite Mook.
  • Justified:
  • Inverted: After knocking out Bob and stealing his equipment, new enemies appear wielding this equipment.
  • Subverted: Bob takes down an Elite Mook but fails to pick up his flamethrower after looting him.
  • Double Subverted: But Bob was in the middle of a battle and didn't have the time to remove the heavy fuel tank. Once all enemies are dead, Bob can then pick up the flamethrower and use it.
  • Parodied: Enemies appear with special weapons for the sole purpose of being killed so Bob can acquire them.
  • Zig Zagged: Near the beginning of the game, Bob's enemies have all the guns and there are no shops available yet, so Bob's only means of armament are through looting and stealing. Later on, shops appear which allow Bob to purchase the guns his enemies had... until new enemies turn up wielding new weaponry. Once enough of them are defeated, however, weapon shops will begin to sell those weapons too.
  • Averted: All the weapons and items that can be looted can also be purchased from stores.
  • Enforced: The writers wanted to encourage scavenging and searching enemies, so they made certain weapons only available through looting.
  • Lampshaded: "Why do the enemies always get the cool guns? At least I can take them when I'm done..."
  • Invoked: The organization Bob works for was able to manipulate the Big Bad's army so that their elite troops would come to fight Bob. The organization knew Bob would be able to take them down and thus acquire their weaponry.
  • Exploited: Bob's enemies apply ID tags onto their weapons in order to track down whoever killed the wielders and looted their gears.
  • Defied: Bob's enemies make sure to give all their Mooks the same gear, so that Bob won't gain any special equipment from looting them.
