Basic Trope: Police officers eating donuts.

  • Straight: Officer Bob stops at a donut shop.
  • Exaggerated:
  • Downplayed:
    • Officer Bob admits he likes a donut every now and then, but is hardly ever seen eating one.
    • Officer Bob is often seen eating bagels.
  • Justified:
    • Dippin' Donutz is one of the few places open late at night and early in the morning, while Officer Bob is working. It's also cheap (maybe even free for law enforcement) and close by the precinct.
    • Officer Bob is The Smart Guy, so he needs donuts and sweet stuff to concentrate.
  • Inverted:
  • Subverted:
    • Officer Bob is seen at his desk, eating lunch while grinding through paperwork.
    • Officer Bob is at the donut shop, but the donuts he buys are for his wife and kids at home.
    • Officer Bob wants to stay in shape so he can catch bad guys, so he generally eats healthy food.
  • Double Subverted:
    • But later, he goes to Dippy's and buys a donut and a cup of coffee.
    • But he can't resist eating one on the way home.
    • But he won't say no to a free donut when guys at work buy them.
  • Parodied:
    • The precinct is located inside the donut shop.
    • A police car is seen with lights and sirens on, speeding as if to an emergency, and Officer Bob is talking to other cops over the radio... And arrives at Dippy's to buy a box of donuts.
    • Officer Bob pulls someone over, not for speeding or DUI or any other traffic violation... But because they have a box of donuts.
    "I'll need to confiscate these."
  • Zig Zagged: At a police station, some of the officers working there are frequently seen eating donuts while others never do.
  • Averted: No police officers are ever seen eating or talking about donuts.
  • Enforced: The Coconut Effect
  • Lampshaded:
  • Invoked: While working a late-night patrol or stakeout, Officer Bob gets really hungry and buys himself a donut and a cup of coffee to keep himself going.
    • Dippin' Donutz offers freebies to law enforcement personnel. Police officers, being human, tend to come when you offer them free things. Which the Stupid Crooks who occasionally try to rob Dippin' Donutz learn the hard way.
  • Exploited:
    • A teacher invites a couple police officers to talk to her class for career day, and buys them donuts in the expectation that they'll like them.
    • A criminal tries to distract the cops with donuts.
    • The donut shop owner offers free donuts to law enforcement officers to save on hiring security personnel. After all, if his shop is full of cops during business hours, the Stupid Crooks who try to rob the place understand their mistake very quickly.
  • Defied:
    • Officer Bob is on a diet, and needs to resist the temptation to eat donuts.
    • Officer Bob quite likes donuts, usually, but refuses to eat them on duty because he's sick of the stereotype.
  • Discussed: "You think I could get rich if I opened up a donut shop near the police station?"
  • Conversed: "Why does every cop on TV eat donuts?"
  • Implied: Alice mentions Officer Bob has just captured a criminal and remarks that the suspect was pretty dumb to try to rob a donut shop.
  • Deconstructed: The new Chief is a seriously By-the-Book Cop, and vows that any officer caught accepting freebies from local businesses will be fired. Bob's wife persuades him it's a good thing because he was putting on a lot of weight eating nothing but coffee and donuts.
  • Reconstructed: Officer Bob is shown working out to make up for eating donuts, and presents all of his donut receipts during the internal affairs audit.
  • Played For Laughs: A scene taking place at Dippy's involves an entire donut shop full of cops. Someone then tries to rob the place.
  • Played For Drama: Someone with a grudge against either police/authority figures in general or Officer Bob puts a bomb inside of a jelly donut and gives it to Officer Bob.
