Basic Trope: A (usually female) character has a negative attitude about the male gender.

  • Straight: Alice has a tough time befriending men and letting them get close to her. She may also view them as The Unfair Sex to some extent.
  • Exaggerated:
    • Alice outright hates men, and believes the world would be better off without them. She may even move into (or start) a Lady Land with like-minded women to facilitate this, or conspire into an outright Gendercide.
    • Alice freaks out and shoots Bob when all he said to her is, "Hi."
  • Downplayed:
    • Alice avoids interacting with men, but she doesn't actively hate them either.
    • Alice thinks men are okay, but inferior towards women.
    • Alice doesn’t hate men per se, she’s more so afraid and kind of uncomfortable around them.
    • Alice hates men in general, but she makes an exception to Dude Looks Like a Lady and androgynous-looking men because they're Not Like Other Guys, or even they are her type to turn her on.
    • Alice is usually decent with men unless they offend her, and then she complains that they’re misogynistic rapists have always oppressed women.
  • Justified:
    • Alice was raped or abused (maybe by a stranger, maybe by a relative, maybe by a boyfriend), and this is her way of preventing that from happening again.
    • Alice is a Straw Feminist.
    • Alice comes from a No Woman's Land where men have committed terrible deeds against their female peers.
    • Bob grew to despise men because he grew up in a society where misogyny doesn't exist for him. As such, it's a brutal and horrifying culture shock when his female peers are assaulted, harassed and cruelly belittled by men who gleefully indulge in their misogyny, even the supposedly "good, non-sexist" men. It ends up also causing Bob to be deeply distraught and self-loathing, wondering if this toxic worldview could influence him and make him just as monstrous as these walking caricatures of people; if he was going to end up hurting those he loved because of him being a man as well.
  • Inverted:
  • Gender-Inverted:
  • Subverted:
    • We hear Alice hates men, but that was just slander...
    • Or, we hear she hates men, but she's shown to be just as bitter to her fellow women. She's actually just an all-round Jerkass...
    • "Does not like men" turns out to just mean Alice is a lesbian. She has no problem with men in general, she just has no romantic interest in them.
  • Double Subverted:
    • Which turns out to be true...
    • But then she comes out with the fact that she hates men especially...
  • Parodied:
Alice: You're a lesbian because you like women. I'm a lesbian because I hate men. [Adjusts tie] We are not the same.
  • Zig Zagged:
    • Alice's attitude towards men varies between hating them, a mild dislike, and really liking them.
    • Alice dislikes some men, but not others.
  • Averted: Alice gets along alright with the male characters.
  • Enforced:
  • Lampshaded: "Why did you trip Bob this morning?" "Because he's a man and I hate men, ALL the men."
  • Invoked: Bob does things (deliberately or unintentionally) to offend or upset or annoy Alice.
  • Exploited: Anti-feminists use Alice's nasty views to attack feminism.
  • Defied: "Yes, I know that bashing men for being men makes a woman look cool, strong and independent but that's not the kind of "coolness" or "strength" or "independence" I'm looking for, thank you."
  • Discussed: "It's not that I hate men. It's just that I haven't met any decent one yet."
  • Conversed: ???
  • Deconstructed:
    • After rejecting each and every man who had an interest in her and carefully avoiding to interact with people born with a Y-chromosome, Alice ends up an old spinster, surrounded by cats and unable to have a normal interaction with anyone.
    • Alice learns the hard way that not everyone is not willing to befriend or serve a woman who constantly insults men and threatens men with oppression. Men are extremely reluctant to hang out with her because of her prejudice and they know that being deemed "one of the good ones" hardly excuses her prejudice since the sentiment can always be revoked at the drop of a hat. Women, on the other hand, don't agree with Alice's beliefs and believe Alice doesn't speak for them. Due to Alice's misandry, it makes it hard for her to socialize with others because they are quickly exhausted by her beliefs and quick temper towards men.
  • Reconstructed: Alice learns that not all men suck, and gets to know at least one that she can have a positive relationship with. Nevertheless, she's harsh and assertive around him.
  • Played For Laughs:
  • Played For Drama: Alice was raped and thus has a psychological hatred of men. She knows it's irrational but can't get over her trauma-induced anger.
  • Implied: Alice is consistently rude to every man she talks to, but it's not clear why.
