Basic Trope: Someone doesn't respond to a shocking statement until later.
- Straight: Alice asks Bob where Charlie is, and Bob replies that Charlie died. Alice responds, "Oh, okay... Wait, what?!"
- Exaggerated: Alice doesn't realize what Bob said until days later.
- Downplayed: Alice realizes what Bob said about a second after her original statement.
- Justified:
- Alice simply misheard Bob's statement as something more mundane, so it makes sense that she would be surprised to find out that this is not the case.
- Bob said it through a rather convoluted Never Say "Die" statement that, naturally, took her some time to process.
- Inverted: Alice reacts before Bob finishes his sentence.
- Subverted: Alice takes note of what Bob says and just doesn't react at all.
- Double Subverted: Then Alice thinks it over, and when it's finally sunk in, she freaks out.
- Parodied:
- Zig-Zagged: ???
- Averted: Nobody has a delayed reaction to a shocking statement.
- Enforced: ???
- Lampshaded: "Oh, so now you noticed what I said, huh?"
- Invoked: Bob deliberately used the most convoluted way to make his statement, knowing that the time it will take her to understand what he said will (at a minimum) allow him to properly distance himself from her freak out.
- Exploited: ???
- Defied: Alice reacts immediately.
- Discussed: ???
- Conversed: ???
