Basic Trope: Don't expect anyone to be happy about getting clothes as a present.

  • Straight: Little Cynthia has been very excited for Christmas. When she opens her grandma's gift, it's just a shirt. She's enraged.
  • Exaggerated:
    • Not only that, but Cynthia's shirt is two sizes too small and has a statement on the front she doesn't agree with.
    • Eight-year-old Billy gets a skirt for Christmas.
    • Every year, the only present Cynthia gets are items of clothing.
    • Cynthia is an animal or other non-human that doesn't even normally wear clothing, and yet she receives clothing as a gift anyway.
  • Downplayed: Cynthia gets a shirt with a cool design on it. She doesn't dislike it, but it's by far the worst present she received that year.
  • Justified:
    • Cynthia was vocal and reasonable about what kind of gifts she wanted. She's upset by not getting them.
    • Cynthia wants to show her school friends her Christmas gifts, so when she gets the shirt, she worries they will bully her.
    • The clothing that Cynthia was gifted wasn't her style, was too small, or otherwise wasn't something she'd like anyway. No wonder she's upset.
  • Inverted: Cynthia is overjoyed at getting clothes and wants them more than toys.
  • Subverted:
    • Cynthia's grandma apologizes and says that the shirt wasn't actually her gift. She takes out a new present.
    • Cynthia accepts the shirt with a surprising amount of grace, thanks her grandma, and goes into her room.
    • Billy asked for a skirt.
  • Double Subverted:
    • To Subverted #1:
      • To Cynthia's disappointment, the new present is a pair of socks.
      • It turns out Billy was supposed to get the shirt, and he's also disappointed when it arrives.
    • To Subverted #3:
  • Zig-Zagged: Some years Cynthia wants clothes, and other times she doesn't. Even then, she can be won over with a really cool piece of clothing, but what she thinks is cool also varies with time.
  • Averted:
    • Cynthia just gets toys for Christmas.
    • Cynthia is okay with getting clothes for Christmas.
    • Cynthia doesn't get anything for Christmas.
    • Christmas isn't seen happening in the work.
  • Enforced: To add drama to the gift-giving occasion.
  • Lampshaded: "I got clothes!? Seriously!? I wanted toys!"
  • Exploited: Someone who doesn't like Cynthia gifts her clothes so she'll be annoyed.
  • Defied:
    • Cynthia's parents teach her to be grateful for any gifts she get, no matter how disappointing they may seem.
    • Cynthia's relatives avoid giving her clothing as a gift, at least not as the main present.
  • Discussed: "I wonder what my Christmas presents could be. I just hope they aren't clothes."
  • Conversed: "Why are TV grandmas are always giving their kids clothes?"
  • Implied: Cynthia's grandma is seen wrapping presents, one of which is a shirt. After Christmas morning, Cynthia isn't happy.
