Basic Trope: A video game obstacle that requires you to collect a large amount of Global Currency before you can continue past it.

  • Straight: In Tales of Troperia XI, the guard at the only gate out of the Green Hill Zone around the First Town requires a 1000 gold bribe to let you pass.
  • Exaggerated: The guard requires a 10,000 gold bribe.
  • Downplayed: He requires a 100 gold bribe.
  • Justified:
    • The Green Hill Zone is quarantined due to The Plague and the guard is risking his job to let you through, so he needs the money to cover the risk he is taking.
    • The ship you're boarding has last-minute fees.
  • Inverted:
    • In order to advance you must reduce your wealth to below a certain threshold as the gatekeeper does not trust anybody wealthy.
    • You get paid for bypassing an obstacle.
    • You need to spend money to backtrack.
  • Subverted: Once you bring the money, the guard has second thoughts and still refuses to let you pass. Instead, another plot option opens up allowing you to continue another way.
  • Double Subverted: ...that route eventually requires you to buy a special pass which costs exactly 1000 gold.
  • Parodied:
  • Zig-Zagged: The guard demands a 1000 gold bribe to let you pass. Returning to him after collecting it, you find that he has been Reassigned to Antarctica for accepting bribes and has been replaced by another guard who refuses to let you pass, initiating a boss battle you have to win in order to pass.
  • Averted: No quests in the game require you to pay gold to complete them.
  • Enforced: The game is based on a book in which the main characters do odd jobs around the First Town in order to bribe the guard, so it is implemented the same way in the game.
  • Lampshaded: Party member Quirby comments upon hearing the guard's price "great, so Saving the World is on hold while we go herd sheep for coins..."
  • Exploited:
  • Defied:
    • After hearing the guard's price, the party can choose to attack him instead, getting past if they win.
    • The Rival Claidheamh nonchalantly kills the guard because he's bored of waiting for the party to advance.
  • Discussed:
  • Conversed:
  • Deconstructed:
  • Reconstructed:
  • Played for Laughs: Every obstacle encountered is another guard who heard about how much gold adventurers get and the previous guard bribed and demands progressively more than the previous one.
  • Played for Drama:
