Basic Trope: A list goes, "Item A; Item B; Item A+B."

  • Straight: Alice's grocery list reads "bread, eggs, breaded eggs."
  • Exaggerated:
  • Downplayed: The list reads "potatoes, salad, potato salad."
  • Justified:
    • Alice wants to buy breaded eggs (Scotch eggs?) as well as bread and eggs.
    • Breaded eggs are a real in universe type of dish similar to a breakfast burrito but sealed in a pastry shell instead which resembles an egg of bread.
    • Breaded eggs have an actual name, but Alice doesn't remember it, so she resorts to Buffy Speak.
  • Inverted:
    • "Bread, eggs, eggy bread."
    • "Breaded eggs, bread, eggs."
    • "Bread, eggs, and something else that is neither bread nor eggs."
    • "Bread and eggs, but not breaded eggs."
  • Subverted: "Bread, eggs, breaded ... fish sticks."
  • Double Subverted: "Don't forget 'breaded eggs'! They save us lots of time at breakfast."
  • Parodied: The grocery store has three aisles of breaded eggs.
  • Zig-Zagged: "Bread, eggs, milk, butter, buttermilk, cucumbers, breaded eggs, apples."
  • Averted:
    • "Bread, eggs, milk, butter, carrots, orange juice."
    • There is no list.
  • Enforced: "Quick! We need a new gag! Any ideas?" "I know! A redundant list!" "Perfect!"
  • Lampshaded: Bob asks Alice, "Why do we need bread, eggs, and breaded eggs?"
  • Invoked: Alice notices that the list reads "bread, eggs", and decides to add "breaded eggs" for laughs.
  • Exploited: Some weeks after Alice writes "breaded eggs" on the grocery list, Bob is depressed for unknown reasons. Alice gives him a good laugh by showing him the old list.
  • Defied: Alice crosses "breaded eggs" off the list, for fear that she might get confused while doing the shopping.
  • Discussed:
Alice: I'm going grocery-shopping. Is there anything you can think of that we need?
    Bob: Bread.
    Alice: Yep.
    Bob: Eggs.
    Alice: Got 'em.
    Bob: Breaded eggs?
Alice: Breaded eggs? I don't know that we need breaded eggs; heck, I don't even know how you would put bread on the outside of eggs...
  • Conversed: "Breaded eggs, huh? What was Bob drinking when he wrote that list?"
  • Deconstructed:
    • It comes at a high price.
    • The nature of the item makes it sound ridiculous, and someone calls it bullcrap.
  • Reconstructed:
    • A competing grocery store offers breaded eggs at a reasonable price.
    • Then someone says, "Bull, crap, bullcrap!" and everyone laughs.
