Basic Trope: Two female characters exalt their masculinity in contrasting ways.
- Straight: Jane is polite, elegant, dresses in a very nice suit, and takes a male position in partner dance. Patty is crude, aggressive, swears frequently, and enjoys drinking, guns, and sports.
- Exaggerated: Both Jane and Patty look like men, but Jane is The Social Expert Chick Magnet who likes grooming herself, wears a cool, conservative suit, and acts flawlessly like James Bond, and Patty is a Hotblooded enjoyable fighter who speaks in a loud, raspy voice, has shaven head and pumps iron so much she has biceps the size of tree trunks.
- Downplayed: Jane is a classical musician who prefers suits and ties over gowns and high-heels, and Patty is a rock musician who prefers biker jackets and dyed hair.
- Justified:
- Jane was raised by a well-mannered father, while Patty was raised by a rough and tough father.
- Jane is naturally polite and quiet, while Patty is naturally active and rebellious.
- Inverted: Light Feminine and Dark Feminine—two girls who are both feminine, but in different ways.
- Gender Inverted:
- Noble Male, Roguish Male—two guys who are both masculine, but in different ways.
- Two guys are both feminine in different ways.
- Subverted: The first few times Jane and Patty meet each other, becomes clear that both of them are Girly Girl with a Tomboy Streak.
- Double Subverted: After time passes, they definitely undergo Tomboyness Upgrade and lead to this trope.
- Parodied: Jane tries to befriend Belinda, but Belinda tells her they can't be friends because she isn't The Lad-ette and they need contrasting boyish personalities to have an interesting dynamic.
- Zig Zagged: Jane and Patty keep switching between being Tomboy and Girly Girl.
- Averted:
- None of the female characters in the story interact so their personalities can't be contrasted.
- There is only one Tomboy character in the entire series.
- Enforced: The creators want to subvert gender norms by representing two masculine girls in different ways.
- Lampshaded: "Looking for Jane and Patty? A girl who looks like Elliot Page and orders martini is Jane, and a loud girl who wears a spiked leather jacket and orders beer is Patty."
- Invoked: Patty was criticized for being rude and mean due to her Fratbro interests and personality, so she befriends a well-mannered tomboy to prove that not all tomboys are rude.
- Exploited: Mark turns Jane and Patty against each other.
- Defied:
- Jane and Patty refuse to be friends with people who have different clothing styles or personalities.
- Both Jane and Patty undergo Girliness Upgrade.
- Discussed: "You like wine, I like beer. You love jazz, I love Heavy Metal. You are a Distaff Counterpart of James Bond, I am a Distaff Counterpart of Rambo...."
- Conversed: "I think boyish stuff fits me better, but after I see Jane and Patty, which is the best way to express it?"
