Basic Trope: A genie that gives you your wish, with the best possible interpretation for you.

  • Straight: Bob asks for wealth. A significant sum provided to him in a way that leaves a neat, clean paper trail (no government officials wondering if he's a criminal), looks mundane (so no nosy paranormal investigators), hurts no one, and is easily liquidated into spendable cash if it isn't cash already.
  • Exaggerated:
    • Not only does he get the requested wealth exactly as he wanted it, it's on a regular lifetime schedule.
    • The genie doesn't bother asking for wishes, it looks into the mind and grants the heartfelt desires of the owner.
    • When Bob, who is suicidal, wishes for a quick and painless death, the genie initially grants it, guides him through It's a Wonderful Plot and revives him for free once he regained the will to live.
  • Downplayed: The genie is a benevolent trickster with an Omniscient Morality License who ensures Bob gets what he needs, even if it's not precisely what he asked for.
  • Justified:
    • Bob is getting the wish in repayment for something, and the genie wants to give the best possible wish in order to clear the debt.
    • The genie was bound into the lamp as a punishment, and must fulfill a thousand and one wishes to be freed. If people are happy with the results of their wishes, word gets around and people are more likely to seek out and make wishes on the lamp.
    • Bob is a good person who deserves honest dealing with the genie.
  • Inverted:
    • Bob gets the exact opposite of what he wished for.
    • Jackass Genie
  • Subverted: Bob ask for, and gets wealth in a way that looks perfect. Until he reads the fine print and discovers he's the victim of a Jerkass Genie playing the long game.
  • Double Subverted: ...though it later turns out the "negative" detail was actually insurance against a problem that would have cropped up otherwise; it's for the best.
  • Parodied: ???
  • Zig Zagged: ???
  • Averted: No genies appear in the work.
  • Enforced: Deus ex Machina, only a genie could save the intended message of doing good is rewarding.
  • Lampshaded: Bob notices that the lamp has "Benevolent Genie Inside" engraved on the side.
  • Invoked: Bob's first wish with a Literal Genie is a (very carefully worded) request that the genie behave this way instead.
  • Exploited: Emperor Evulz wishes for dangerous things from the genie, knowing it can't go wrong.
  • Defied: The genie would grant wishes this way... except he's being used by a jerk, and so deliberately plays Literal Genie or worse.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Deconstructed: The genie can try its best to make the wishes work right without side-effects, but it can't stop Bob from ruining his own life with the application of the dangerous wishes.
  • Reconstructed: Bob learns to be careful and appreciative of the genie, earning its friendship and passing his wisdom on to other people.
