Basic Trope: Bears are portrayed as comedic.

  • Straight: Barry the Bear is known for being the main comic relief.
  • Exaggerated:
    • Barry is pretty much the entire source of comedy.
    • All bears are funny.
  • Downplayed: Barry can be funny sometimes, but isn't the main source of comedy.
  • Justified: Barry has a naturally humorous personality.
  • Inverted:
  • Subverted: Barry turns out to have been Evil All Along.
  • Double Subverted: But despite being evil, Barry is still very much so Laughably Evil.
  • Parodied: A comedy routine is headed by Bob the Human and Barry the Bear. Barry is a wild, hostile grizzly bear who mauls Bob. Everyone laughs.
  • Zig-Zagged: Barry the Bear makes jokes, but so do Wilfred the Wolf and Rowena the Rabbit. He also isn't entirely comedic, using his physical strength for violence at times, but he does make jokes quite frequently.
  • Averted: Bears are not portrayed as comedic.
  • Enforced:
    • The writers of the story wanted to use a positive Animal Stereotype involving bears.
    • Barry is meant to be based on an existing character that fits this trope, such as Fozzie Bear.
  • Lampshaded: "Barry sure does put the "funny" in Funny Animal!"
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: Barry cheers his sad friend up with his funny bear antics.
  • Defied: Barry refuses to tell jokes.
  • Discussed: "Considering how dangerous they are, bears are surprisingly funny!"
  • Conversed: "When they're not scary, fictional bears are often shown to be funny. I wonder why that is?"
