Basic Trope: Someone believes that statements such as "oh my god" are directed towards them.

  • Straight: Alice yells "Oh my god!", causing Bob to answer "Yes?"
  • Exaggerated: Alice yells the names of every major deity, causing Bob to respond "Hey, you only needed to say my name once."
  • Downplayed: "Thank God my baby is safe." says Alice, and Bob, resident Deadpan Snarker who was the one risking his bacon to save Alice's child, answers with a "you're welcome!".
  • Justified:
    • Bob has a god complex.
    • Bob actually is a god, and didn't realize that statements such as "oh my god" are expressions.
    • Bob is a hammy wiseass and is taunting Alice.
  • Inverted: Alice yells "Oh my god!", causing Bob to respond that he's the opposite.
  • Subverted: Bob answers with "Yes?", but only because he misheard Alice say "Bob" rather than "God".
  • Double Subverted: ...Turns out he was lying about that.
  • Parodied: ???
  • Zig-Zagged: Alice yells "Oh god!". Barbara answers with "Yes?", but only because she misheard Alice say "Barb" with Alice's distinctive Boston accent rather than "God". Turns out she was lying about that... and she actually thought Alice called her "mom".
  • Averted: Nobody answers to deities' names.
  • Enforced:
  • Lampshaded: ???
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: ???
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
