Basic Trope: Every name in the family begins with the same letter.
  • Straight: Alice and Arthur are parents to Alex, Amanda, and Anthony.
  • Exaggerated: Every single member of the extended family on both sides have first, middle, and surnames that all start with A.
  • Downplayed:
    • Their first names all start with A, but Alex goes by Lex, Amanda goes by Mandy, and Anthony goes by Tony.
    • The children's middle names all start with A, but not their first names.
  • Justified:
    • It's a centuries-old family tradition in Alice's family to name children something that starts with the letter A.
    • Alice and Arthur, whose names both start with A, didn't want any of their kids to feel like they had an Odd Name Out, so all their kids' names start with A.
  • Inverted: Alice and Arthur name their kids down the alphabet, so their kids' names Brian, Caroline, and Dennis.
  • Subverted:
    • Alex, Amanda, and Anthony find out they have a long-lost sister named Mia.
    • Alex and Anthony are brothers. They're friends with Amanda, who looks a lot like them. People tend to mistake Amanda for their sister, but she's not actually related to them.
  • Double Subverted:
    • "Mia" is short for "Amelia."
    • Mia is not actually their sister.
  • Parodied:
    • Alice and Arthur run out of names for their new kid, so to keep the A-theme going they name the child after an object like Axe.
    • Alice and Arthur's baby name dictionary has all pages but the "A" section ones ripped out.
  • Zig Zagged: Alice and Arthur seriously consider naming their next kid Sam, but worry about how "Sam" will feel with an Odd Name Out. They compromise by planning an A-name for "Sam"'s middle name, but then their parents convince them to just name "Sam" something that starts with A.
  • Averted: Alice and Bob have kids named Charlie, Sam, Adrian, and Mary. They show no particular preference towards any starting initial.
  • Enforced: The author wants the audience to remember that the characters are related, so all of them have names that start with A.
  • Lampshaded: "Hey, everyone in your family has names that start with the letter A!"
  • Invoked: "Honey, wouldn't it be great if our kids had A-names like us?"
  • Exploited: Amelia pretends she's their long-lost sister, using her name as evidence.
  • Defied: Alice and Arthur don't want their kids' names to start with A, so they actively avoid naming their children anything that starts with A.
  • Discussed: "Your entire family's names start with A, it's like a sitcom family!"
  • Conversed: "Have you ever thought about how in books sometimes all members of a family have the same starting initial?"
  • Implied: Amanda says that her parents like A-names, but we never meet any other member of her family.
  • Played For Laughs: During their Last-Minute Baby Naming, Alice and Arthur go through a whole host of perfectly good names, before settling on a name that starts with A without realizing it. This happens every time Alice gives birth.
  • Played For Drama: Amanda is bullied at school for no reason other than her family's names all start with A, so she resolves to change her name once she's old enough.
