Playing With / Afraid of Blood

Go To

Basic Trope: A character is afraid of blood and reacts badly to perceiving it.

  • Straight: Bob is deeply afraid of the sight of blood, and tends to react to the sight of it with discomfort, anxiety, and/or fear.
  • Exaggerated: Bob experiences a violent Freak Out whenever he sees blood.
  • Downplayed: Bob is uncomfortable at the sight of blood, but doesn't react to it with extreme fear or anxiety.
  • Justified:
    • Bob suffered a severe injury and almost died from blood loss in the past, causing him to deeply fear the sight of blood.
    • Bob has a Superpowered Evil Side whose appearance is triggered by the sight or scent of blood, and does her best to avoid it as a result.
  • Inverted: Bob is deeply fascinated by blood, perhaps to the point of Hemo-Eroticism.
  • Subverted: Bob seems to be afraid of blood, but is actually afraid of the colour red; he has no problem dealing with Alien Blood.
  • Double Subverted: ...Until he faints while looking at a smear of Alien Blood, revealing he was indeed afraid of blood and has been trying to suppress this fear.
  • Parodied: Bob faints at the sight of red food colouring because it reminds him of blood. When he wakes up he has a tiny gash on his thumb, which prompts him to faint again (to the bewilderment of onlookers).
  • Zig Zagged: ???
  • Averted: Bob doesn't mind the sight of blood.
  • Enforced: "Bob's a surgeon and making him afraid of blood will cause some great in-character drama."
  • Lampshaded: ???
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: Dicky notices that Bob is afraid of blood, and embarrasses him in front of several others by purposefully giving himself a papercut then showing Bob it, intending to cause a violent emotional outburst.
  • Defied: Bob goes to therapy to cure his fear of blood.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Played For Drama: Bob is a qualified doctor in a Medical Drama whose hemophobia renders him unsuitable for performing operations, despite his skill in the field. When a patient in dire need of life-saving surgery is bought in and the other qualified surgeons are busy or indisposed, Bob must try to overcome his hemophobia and perform the surgery, leading to a tense episode of him struggling against the onset of his fear while in the middle of the operation.
