Basic Trope: There is a big secret. The Reveal is provided by accident.

  • Straight:
    • Bob reveals the secret to Alice because he lost his self-control and talked without thinking
    • Bob casually mentions Alice the secret, without knowing that she did not know it yet.
  • Exaggerated: Bob tells Alice every of his 50 secrets up front, in a single sentence. He has no idea that he even hinted at them.
  • Downplayed: Bob mentions by accident something that hints the secret, but not an actual full reveal.
  • Justified:
    • We see Bob in detail in the circumstances that led him to a state where he may talk without thinking, such as getting drunk
    • The misunderstanding that led Bob to think that Alice was aware of the secret, when she was not, is explained before the reveal.
  • Inverted: Bob wants to tell Alice the big secret, but gets lost in small talk and never manages to do so.
  • Subverted
    • Bob is a terrorist, and he's talking to Alice, who does not know that. "I love to kill people... in the new Counter-Strike mod!"
    • Bob reveals the secret, but Alice takes it as a Cassandra Truth.
    • Bob reveals the secret, but Alice dramatically or comically misses the point and does not realize that she has heard a reveal.
  • Double Subverted: Bob is a terrorist, and he's talking to Alice, who does not know that. "I love to kill people... in the new Counter-Strike mod! But enough of games, give me the bazooka from my closet. That IRS building will not destroy itself!"
  • Parodied: Jacob is usually a bad liar, and when he is placed under a spell that causes him to blurt out things randomly everyone assumes that he's spilling secrets when none of it is true.
  • Zig Zagged: Bob accidentally lets a secret slip to Alice, and then hurriedly tries to cover up or laugh it off as a joke, only for Alice to reveal that she already knew, and fill Bob in on some things even he didn't know about. However, the police officer eavesdropping on their conversation hadn't been in the loop, and takes it down as evidence.
  • Averted: Bob discusses the geopolitical causes and consequences of terrorism, without pointing out that he's a terrorist himself.
  • Enforced: The work is nearing its end. The secret must be revealed.
  • Lampshaded: A third character points out to Bob that Alice did not know the secret he has just revealed.
  • Invoked: Alice knows Bob is hiding something, so she leads the conversation in a way that makes it easier for Bob to slip up and reveal his secret.
  • Exploited:
  • Defied: A third character realizes that Bob is about to tell Alice the secret, and derails the conversation to another safer topic.
  • Discussed: "This Bob guy is pretty arrogant, right? Since we can't hold him without evidence, I'll just say we're letting him go because we know there's no way he's smart enough to have pulled it off, and I bet he'll spill."
  • Conversed: "Now, this probably wouldn't work in real life, but since TV villains are hotheads we can just script Alice to trick Bob into admitting he did it, and end the episode after that."
  • Deconstructed: Bob accidentally reveals his dark secret to Alice. She tells the government, who treat him like a villain and give a good price for his head. He is endlessly hunted for the rest of his days.
  • Reconstructed:
    • With Bob gone, the city will be much safer.
    • Bob is now much more careful with his secrets.
  • Logical Extreme: Bob's accidental reveal sets off a chain reaction, causing a series of catastrophic events that threaten the entire world.
  • Lampshaded: Alice sarcastically comments, "Oh, thanks for the accidental reveal, Bob. I guess you couldn't have planned that any better if you tried."
  • Played for Laughs: Bob accidentally reveals the secret while doing a ridiculous dance routine, causing everyone to burst into laughter instead of taking it seriously.
  • Played for Drama: The accidental reveal occurs during a tense confrontation between Bob and Alice, leading to an emotional and intense scene as the truth comes to light.
  • Played for Horror: The accidental reveal happens in a dark, eerie setting, with ominous music and chilling visuals, intensifying the impact and creating a sense of dread.
  • Implied: The camera cuts away just as Bob is about to reveal the secret, leaving it to the audience's imagination to fill in the details.
  • Unparodied: Despite the comedic tone of the story, Bob's accidental reveal is treated seriously and has significant consequences for the characters and the plot.
  • Untwisted: The audience expects Bob to accidentally reveal the secret, but he manages to keep it to himself, surprising everyone.
  • Explored: The accidental reveal becomes a major plot point, leading to a deep exploration of the consequences and fallout resulting from the revelation.
