The Sundance Institute and Film Festival is a marker in film quality. It gets attached to names as much as having an Academy Award, with the annual Utah festival being the largest in the United States — it is held in January and so a good screening ground for Oscar nods. Though it caters only for "independent films" with the broadening of that term and the simultaneous broadening of award contention to not be unofficially restricted to Hollywood, a screening at Sundance is becoming one check of must-watch movies. Its correlation with success is often mapped as starting around 2008, which may be reflected with the number of Sundance films that have TV Tropes pages drastically increasing around this time.
